Cleveland State Hosts Lone Dual Event of Season

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University fencing team hosted its lone dual event of the season this past Saturday inside Woodling Gymnasium.

The CSU men posted a 3-3 mark on the day while a depleted group of Viking women went 1-5 on the day.

The Cleveland State men began their day with an 18-9 loss to Vassar in the first round. The group bounced back with a 21-6 win over Case Western Reserve and a thrilling 14-13 win over Detroit Mercy. The Vikings then suffered a heartbreaking, 14-13, loss to Michigan. CSU ended its day with a 20-7 win over McKendree before falling to Vassar for the second time, 19-8.

The men's epee group put forth the best results on the weekend, including posting five victories against four defeats in CSU's second matchup with Vassar.

On the women's side, Cleveland State was unable to field complete teams in both the epee and saber category due to injuries. As a result, the Vikings had to forfeit 12 bouts against each opponent, presenting the squad with a near-impossible task. CSU fell to Vassar (4-23), Case Western Reserve (9-18), Detroit Mercy (12-15), Michigan (5-22) and Vassar for a second time (9-18). CSU did post a victory over McKendree in the fifth round by a 14-13 margin.

Cleveland State will next be in dual action at the NU Duals on the first weekend of February at the University of Notre Dame. The Vikings are slated to face host Northwestern, Air Force and Princeton among other schools.
