Viking Men Raise Record to 16-2-1 with Women Improving to 14-5

CLEVELAND, Ohio- The Cleveland State men's and women's fencing team competed against Detroit, Case Western, Vassar College, Wayne State, Florida, and Michigan on Saturday at Woodling Gym. 

The Cleveland State men improved to 16-2-1 on the year, defeating Vassar 14-13, tied with Michigan 9-9, won over Wayne State 19-8, defeated Case Western 21-6, and Florida 20-7.  The Viking men were led by Yasun Salih (Epee) who posted 14 wins against his opponents.  Stand out Sophomore Paul Duchow (Epee) posted an 11 win performance.  Senior leader Tom Bienvenu (Saber) won 11 bouts.  Freshman Brandon Bauer (Foil) tallied nine wins on the day and Freshman Gianfranco Trovato (Foil) added nine wins to his resume.       

The women improved to 14-5 on the season. The Vikings won over Detroit 14-13, Case Western 23-4, and Florida 18-6.  On the women's side, the Vikings had solid showings by Freshman Samantha Finster (Foil) who had 11 victories on the day.  Another key contributor for the Vikings was Junior Sudeshna Chakraborty (Foil) who won nine bouts on the day.  Junior Christine Bocci (Saber) had an excellent day on the strips, posting an 11 win day.  Freshman Megan Rose (Saber) tallied a nine win day over her bout opponent.      

The fencing team will be back in action tomorrow at home at Woodling Gym, as the Vikings will compete in the Kirlay Open.  Bouts will begin at 9:00 a.m.
