Vikings Fencing Team Starts Season Off  with Men Going 7-1 and Women 6-2 at Ohio State Duals

COLUMBUS, Ohio-  The Cleveland State men's and women's fencing team posted the best start of the season in over 6 years at the OSU Duals.  

The men posted a 7-1 record with the only loss to OSU. The loss to OSU was the best showing CSU has had in a decade. The mens team was led by senior epeeist Salih Yasun who won all three bouts against OSU. Salih went 17-7 on the day. Following Salih was junior foilist Phelan Spence who went 2-1. Phelan loss to OSU was against Zain Shaito; NCAA Champion and 2012 Olympian. Phelan led the men's team overall with a record for the weekend of 23-1.

Paul Duchow led the mens epee squad overall with a record of 19-5. Leading the men's saber squad was senior Tom Bienvenu with a record 17-5. On the day the men's foil squad led the men's team going 7-1 with their only loss being OSU. Freshman Gianfranco Trovato went 19-5 and Brandon Bauer was 18-6 for the day, both having excellent performances in their first outing as Vikings.

The women's team started their best season in over seven seasons going 6-2. While the women struggled a bit at the start of the day they very quickly warmed up and performed very well overall as a team. The women's foil team led the way with two close wins of 14-13 over Purdue and Michigan State. In both rounds, the women's foil squad won eight of none bouts to rally the team.

The women's foil squad was led by freshman Samantha Finster who went 15-7 for the day. Samantha had the strongest showing for the women's team overall. Following Samantha was junior saberist Christine Bocci who tallied a record of 14-8. Christine also posted the only win against OSU in varsity play. Freshman Megan Rose, saber, also had a winning record of 12-10.

Leading the women's epee squad was sophmore Iris Kleinman with a 11-9 record.

"Overall the team's performed very well. We had some very close matches, but we rallied to pull out some close victories. The highlight victories were the women's team vs. Michigan State and Purdue, said Head Coach Andy Tulleners.

The Vikings will compete in their second meet at CASE Western Reserve on November 2nd.
