Max Benton, who has more than 20 years of sports medicince experience, is in his fifth year as the Associate Head Athletics Trainer at Cleveland State.

Benton arrived at CSU after serving as an Athletic Trainer in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation unit in Southwest General Health Center for one year, while also serving an athletics trainer at Olmsted Falls H.S.

From 2001-13, Benton served as the Head Athletic Trainer for the Cleveland Cavaliers, representing the Eastern Conference as the Athletic Trainer at the 2013 NBA All Star Game.

With the Cavaliers, Benton led player healthcare in the areas of preventive medicine, treatments, rehabilitation services and medical records.

He also served as the Chairman of the NBA Trainers Association Scholarship Committee from 2007-11, evaluating and rewarding scholarship applicants. He was also the Head Athletic Trainer for the 2008 NBA Basketball Without Borders in Istanbul, Turkey, evaluating and treating European athletes.

Benton also served as the Assistant Athletic Trainer with the Denver Nuggets from 1995-01 and was an athletic trainer at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in 2001, working with volleyball, wrestling, taekwondo and swimming.

In January of 2009, Benton received a United States Patent for MC2, a device for administering cold therapy to ankles.

Benton has numerous certifications and licenses and is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, as well as the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

Benton earned his Bachelor’s of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Colorado-Boulder in 1995.

Benton and his wife, Jolynne, reside in Avon with their daughter, Emma.
