A LOOK AT WHAT'S HAPPENING
MEN’S BASKETBALL
• The Vikings (9-22, 4-14 HL) open play at the Horizon League Championship as the No. 9 seed and will play No. 4 seeded Green Bay on Saturday (March 5) at 12:00 pm at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.
• The winner advances to the second round to face Milwaukee or Northern Kentucky on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
• CSU closed the regular season by splitting a pair of home games last week, including a 63-58 win over NKU.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
• Cleveland State (7-18, 4-11) will close out the regular season this week, playing three games over a six-day span.
• The Vikings will host Valparaiso on Monday (February 29) and then go on the road to face Wright State (Thursday, March 3) and Northern Kentucky (Saturday, March 5) to close out the Horizon League slate.
• Last time out Cleveland State won its second straight contest, taking down UIC, 72-69. Ashanti Abshaw led the Vikings with her eighth double-double of the year with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
MEN’S & WOMEN’S FENCING
• The men had a strong showing at the Midwest Fencing Championships last weekend, finishing second as a team in the Epee and Foil. The women advanced to the semifinals of the Epee competition, while Sarah Mok finished eighth as an individual in Foil.
MEN’S GOLF
• CSU is back in action at the Davidson Invitational on Monday and Tuesday (Feb. 29-March 1).
• The Vikings finished eighth at the Wexford Intercollegiate last week as Blake Prince shot 72-72-75 to tie for 20th.
WOMEN’S GOLF
• The Vikings opened play at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate on Sunday with a round of 334 with Rayna Oosterhuis carding an 82 for CSU’s low round of the day. The final two rounds will be played on Monday and Tuesday.
SOFTBALL
• CSU is out of action until the Vikings play four games at the Oklahoma State Mizuno Classic from March 11-13.
• Through three weeks of the season, Erica McNew leads CSU, hitting .415 with five runs, two homers and nine RBI.
MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
• CSU had a successful trip to the Horizon League Championship last week, finishing second as a team with 597.5 points. CSU had four first place finishes and one relay win, along with three League records and five school records.
• After recording three first place finishes at the league championship, Philipp Sikatzki was named the Swimer of the Meet and the Athlete of the Year, while head coach Paul Graham was named the Men’s Coach of the Year.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
• Cleveland State competed at the 2016 Horizon League Championship, finishing seventh with 350.5 points.
• Molly McNamara led CSU with a pair of runner-up finishes and a sixth place finish – setting school records in the 100 and 200 fly - and was part of three Viking relay teams. She was named the Horizon League Freshman of the Year.
MEN’S TENNIS
• After playing eight of its last nine matches on the road, CSU (8-4) will finally return home this weekend, hosting Western Michigan and Marietta in a doubleheader on Friday, March 4 at Paramount Tennis Club in Westlake.
• Last time out, the Vikings extended their current winstreak to three matches, picking up wins against Butler (5-2) and Ball State (6-1). Brian Etzkin recorded his 200th career victory with the men’s team in the win over Ball State.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
• The Vikings (3-5) will take the week off from competition, returning to action on Wednesday, March 9 when they host Akron at 3:00 p.m. The match against the Zips is slated to be the first match played in the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion – Cleveland State’s new indoor on-campus facility.
WRESTLING
• CSU (8-8, 4-2 EWL) returns to action at the EWL Championships on Saturday, March 5 at Lock Haven.
• Riley Shaw is ranked 18th in the country and heavyweight and has posted a 25-6 record this year, while Sam Wheeler leads the team with a 26-8 record at 197 pounds. Both grapplers went 5-1 in EWL matches this year.
VIKING OF THE WEEK
Philipp Sikatzki, Men’s Swimming, Junior, Leipzig, Germany
Sikatzki helped CSU to a runner-up finish at the League championship and was named the Swimmer of the Meet and the Athlete of the Year. He won three individual events, setting League records and NCAA “B” cuts in the 100 free, 100 fly and 100 back. He also helped the 200 medley relay team to a win with an NCAA “B” cut time, while also helping the 400 medley relay team to a runner-up finish.
OTHER TOP PERFORMERS
Ashanti Abshaw: The women’s basketball freshman led CSU to a victory over UIC with her eighth double-double of the season (23 points, 10 rebounds).
Molly McNamara: The women’s swimmer was named the Horizon League Freshman of the Year, setting CSU records in both the 100 and 200 fly.
Mitchell Moore: The senior men’s golfer shot a final round two-under-par at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate on Tuesday.
