ATHLETIC ACADEMIC HONORS LUNCHEON PROGRAM

CLEVELAND - A total of 193 student-athletes, representing all 18 intercollegiate sports sponsored at Cleveland State University, were recognized for their academic accomplishments at the 29th annual John Konstantinos Athletic Academic Honors Luncheon, which was held on Tuesday in the Henry Goodman Arena in the Wolstein Center.

The 193 student-athletes, representing 57 percent of CSU's student-athlete population, were recognized for maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or better through the end of the 2018 fall semester.

The cumulative grade point average of all CSU student-athletes is 3.32.

There were a total of 73 first-year honorees, 55 second-year honorees, 39 third-year honorees, 25 fourth-year honorees and one fifth-year honoree.

Several additional awards were handed out at the luncheon.

The "Best of the Best" Team Award, which is given to the sport having the highest team grade point average in the department, went to women's fencing. The team currently has a cumulative 3.83 grade point average.

Women's swimmer Michaela Bargardi (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Farmington Hills Mercy) received the President's Award as the graduating senior student-athlete with the highest grade point average. Bargardi, who has a 4.00 GPA in Speech and Hearing, was a four-year letterwinner and scored at the Horizon League Championship in the backstroke and as a part of the 800 freestyle relay team.

MacJilton Lewis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mariemont), of the men's swimming team, received the 19th annual John McLendon Award, which is given to the student-athlete who best represents the ideals and personal philosophy of McLendon, a former CSU men's basketball coach who is enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame. During his career, Lewis scored at the Horizon League Championship in the 1650 freestyle, the 200 backstroke and the 400 IM.

Women's golfer Rayna Oosterhuis (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada/St. Francis Xavier) received the Konstantinos Family Scholarship, which is presented to the student-athlete who best reflects and embodies the virtues of former CSU Director of Athletics John Konstantinos, including leadership, integrity, perseverance, loyalty and humility. Oosterhuis placed in the top 10 at the Horizon League Championship twice, including a runner-up finish in 2016-17 leading the Vikings to their first-ever conference title.

Since its inception in the Spring of 1991, the Athletic Academic Honors Luncheon has burgeoned from 41 student-athletes honored to the 193 that were honored today.
