Viking Sports Weekly (March 11)

A look at what's happening in Cleveland State Athletics...

Women's Basketball
- The Vikings finished the 2018-19 season with a 10-20 overall record and a 7-11 mark in Horizon League play after falling in the quarterfinals of the Horizon League Tournament last time out.
- This marked the first season under the direction of head coach Chris Kielsmeier.
- Savanna Crockett was named the Horizon League Freshman of the Year, while Mariah Miller earned a spot on the All-League First Team and Mariah White was named to the All-Defensive Team.

Fencing
- Cleveland State had 11 individuals compete at the NCAA Midwest Regional hosted by Notre Dame this past weekend.
- Ahmad Taqi was the highest finishing Viking as he took seventh in men's foil.
- Cleveland State will host the NCAA Championships March 21-24 in the Wolstein Center. Selections will be announced this Tuesday, March 12. 

Men's Swimming & Diving
- Cleveland State will compete in a pair of postseason events this week.
- Senior Curtis Roden and sophomore Matt Akers will compete at the NCAA Zone Diving Championships at Purdue March 14-15.
- The Vikings are hosting the National Invitational Championship March 14-16, with six Viking swimmers slated to compete.

Women's Swimming & Diving
- Cleveland State will host the National Invitational Championship March 14-16.

Wrestling
- Senior Sam Matzek placed fourth at 141 pounds to lead the Vikings at their final EWL Championships.
- CSU finished seventh in the team scoring with eight points.
- Cleveland State announced this past week that it will join the Mid-American Conference as an associate member for wrestling starting next season.

Lacrosse
- Cleveland State will conclude a six-game road trip this week with games at Lafayette Tuesday (March 12) and against nationally ranked North Carolina Sunday (March 17).
- The Vikings used a strong defensive effort to take down BIG EAST foe Marquette, 7-5, this past weekend.
- It marked the first time the Vikings won back-to-back games against Division I opponents.

Men's Tennis
- The Vikings (9-7) will close out their annual Spring Break Trip with a 2:00 p.m. match at Kennesaw State on Wednesday, March 13.
- Last time out, Cleveland State dropped a 5-2 match at Mercer, with Matthew Terry (No. 2) and Luke Phillips (No. 3) picking up singles wins against the Bears.
- Terry picked up his 44th career victory in the first match of the spring break trip, and is now just six wins shy of becoming the 15th Viking all-time with 50 career victories.

Women's Tennis
- Cleveland State (5-7) will close out its annual Spring Break Trip on Wednesday, March 13, facing Kennesaw State in an 11:00 a.m. contest.
- Last time out, the Vikings fell at Akron before starting their spring break trip with a tough 4-3 loss at Mercer.
- Kateryna Avram picked up her team-leading 15th singles win of the year in the match against Mercer. 

Softball
- The Vikings (5-13) will close out their early season tournament schedule this weekend, traveling to Macon, Georgia for the Bears Classic Tournament Friday, March 15 – Sunday, March 17.
- Last time out, Cleveland State went 2-3 at the JU/UNF Spring Break Challenge, picking up wins against La Salle and Jacksonville in its final two games of the weekend.
- Kelly Hysong led the Viking offense with a .476 batting average, notching three doubles and two home runs.

Men's Golf
- Cleveland State will return to action at the USF Invitational, participating in the two-day event in Tampa, Fla. on Monday, March 11 and Tuesday, March 12.
- The USF Invitational will use a unique playing format, as all five Vikings will play in the same group for the entire 54-hole tournament.

Women's Golf
- Cleveland State will play in its second tournament of the spring season this weekend, competing in the MSU Citrus Challenge in Sorrento, Fla. on Sunday, March 17 –Tuesday, March 19.
- Sophomore Madison Butler led the Vikings during the first tournament of the spring season, posting a 78.6 average during the 54-hole tournament. 

Outdoor Track & Field
- The Vikings will begin their outdoor slate at the 49er Classic in Charlotte, N. C. on Thursday, March 14 and Friday, March 15.
- This will be the first of six outdoor events for Cleveland State this spring, and the first time that the Vikings will travel to the state of North Carolina for an event.

Viking Of The Week
Kelly Hysong, Softball
The junior batted .476 in five games at the JU/UNF Spring Break Challenge last weekend, notching three doubles and two home runs. She drove in three runs and had a .905 slugging percentage, including a 3-for-4 effort in the win over La Salle. She also picked up her first two wins in the circle for the Vikings, posting 20 strikeouts through 23.2 innings pitched.
