A LOOK AT WHAT'S HAPPENING

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

  • Chris Kielsmeier was officially introduced as the seventh head coach of the Cleveland State Women's Basketball program last Thursday, taking over for longtime head coach Kate Peterson Abiad who resigned in March.
  • Kielsmeier comes to Cleveland State following 10 years as the head coach at Division II Wayne State College in Nebraska and eight seasons at the helm of Division III Howard Payne University.

MEN'S GOLF

  • The four-time defending Horizon League champion Vikings conclude play at this year's League tournament with the second round on Monday and the final round on Tuesday.
  • CSU began defense of its title with an opening round 303 and is in second place, six shots behind Wright State.
  • Senior Blake Prince is tied for sixth place overall after a first round 74, while junior Anton Krecic and senior Joey Krecic both shot 76 and are tied for 13th.
  • Anton Krecic was named to the All-Horizon League first team at the pre-tournament banquet on Saturday night.

WOMEN'S GOLF

  • The Vikings wrap up play at the Horizon League Championship with the second round on Monday and the final round on Tuesday.
  • The defending League champs shot an opening round 334 and is just four shots behind third place UIC.
  • Sophomore Kaylee Neumeister and freshman Madison Butler both shot 81 and are tied for 13th place. The duo was named to the All-Horizon League second team at Saturday night's banquet.

MEN'S LACROSSE

  • Cleveland State closes its second season this Saturday, April 28, at Detroit Mercy, a team that has won three straight games.
  • The Vikings are coming off of an impressive 15-9 win over Sacred Heart in their final home game this past weekend.
  • Michael Wilson had six points on two goals and four assists while Tristen Hanna scored four goals, three of which came from Wilson.
  • Danny Tesler won 16-of-27 faceoffs, and Stephen Russo made 12 saves as the CSU defense held the nation's second-leading goal scorer to a single goal.

SOFTBALL

  • CSU (11-13-25, 3-8 HL) is slated to host six games this week, beginning with a three-game series against Oakland on Tuesday (one game at 4:00 pm) and Wednesday (doubleheader at 2:00 pm). CSU also hosts Northern Kentucky on Friday at 3:00 pm and Saturday for a 12:00 pm doubleheader.
  • The Vikings split a twinbill and Detroit Mercy last week and dropped three home games to Youngstown State over the weekend.
  • Mackenzie Joecken earned the win at Detroit Mercy, pitching a complete game with nine strikeouts, while Riley Ries, Emery Sipe and Hanna Breeden all hit home runs in the victory.

MEN'S TENNIS

  • The Vikings (15-10, 6-1) will begin their quest for a sixth Horizon League Tournament title this weekend, entering the three-day tournament (Friday, April 27 - Sunday, April 29) as the No. 2 seed and beginning play with a semifinal contest.
  • Last weekend, Cleveland State picked up two wins at IUPUI (6-1) and UIC (6-1), earning a share of the Horizon League Regular Season title with a 6-1 mark in #HLMTEN play this season.
  • The duo of Benjamin Slade and Luke Phillips finished the regular season with perfect 7-0 records against league opponents, marking the first time since 2014 that a Viking has finished a complete league slate undefeated.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

  • Cleveland State (11-12, 7-2) enters the upcoming Horizon League tournament (Friday, April 27 - Sunday, April 29) as the No. 3 seed, and will face sixth-seeded Northern Kentucky in a first round contest on Friday, April 27.
  • Last time out, the Vikings split their matches at IUPUI (W, 5-2) and UIC (L, 7-0) to close out regular season play, finishing the #HLWTEN slate with a 7-2 mark.
  • Junior Isabella Spindler has been Cleveland State's top singles player throughout the spring season, owning a team-best 19-13 overall record, including a 7-2 mark at No. 1 singles against league opponents.

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD

  • Cleveland State will participate in its final tune-up before the Horizon League Outdoor Championship this weekend, taking part in the Ashland Alumni Open on Saturday, April 28.
  • Last time out, the Vikings had a strong showing at the Sparky Adams Invitational, with the 4x100 Relay team placing first, and the trio of Rachel Wenzel (High Jump), Chan'lier Myers (100 Meter Dash) and Lauren Zawie (200 Meter Dash) all recording second place finishes.

VIKING OF THE WEEK

Benjamin Slade | Jr. | Men's Tennis
Slade picked up a pair of wins at No. 4 singles against IUPUI and UIC over the weekend, helping the Vikings clinch a share of the regular season title. Slade finished the regular season with a perfect 7-0 record against League opponents, and also moved into 10th place on the CSU singles wins list with 59 career victories. Slade owns a team-best 17-6 singles record this spring.

Madison Butler | Fr. | Women's Golf
Selected to Second Team All-Horizon League, ranking ninth in League with a 78.9 average.

Tristan Hanna | Fr. | Men's Lacrosse
Scored four goals - his third multi-goal game in the last six - in Saturday's win over Sacred Heart.

Anton Krecic | Jr. | Men's Golf
Was named to the All-Horizon League first team after ranking fourth in League with a 73.8 average.

Kaylee Neumeister | So. | Women's Golf
Named to the all-league team for the second straight season, earning a spot on the second team this year.

Emery Sipe | Fr. | Softball
Hit a pair of home runs and drove in four runs in CSU's games last week.

Rachel Wenzel | Fr. | Women's Outdoor Track & Field
Placed second in the high jump at the Sparky Adams Invitational.
