CLEVELAND - The Cleveland State men's and women's swimming and diving teams not only got back to their winning ways with sweeps of Baldwin-Wallace, Case Western Reserve, Gannon and Oberlin in the City College Meet, but they put up some of their most impressive times and scores of the season Wednesday (Nov. 16) night at Busbey Natatorium.

The men's team claimed wins in all but two events on the night, while the women notched top times in all but three of the events in which they competed. In all, CSU combined to record 12 season-best times or scores on the night.

Junior Bjorn Schantz notched possibly the most impressive performance of the night, swimming the 200 freestyle in a season-best 1:40.28 and finishing less than a second short of the school record. Rui Abreu swam to a 1:39.39 in 1982, the longest-standing current CSU record.

Senior diver Thatcher Carr continued his dominance on the springboards, diving to a season-best score of 383.90 at one meter and a score of 370.00 at three meter. Carr has been a winner in all 24 career diving events that he has been a part of dating back to last season. He has scored over 300 points in all of them.

Additionally, sophomore Johan Norling posted a pair of season-fast times in the meet, scoring a 21.76 in the 50 free and a 51.92 in the 100 fly. Sophomore Dave Duecker added a top time of 59.33 in the 100 breaststroke, while freshman Marko Milenkovic tallied a season-best 47.40 in the 100 free.

For the women's team, senior Kirsty McKechnie topped her season-best time in the 1,000 free, making the trip in 10:46.42, while junior Marianne Lionell bested her time in the 100 breast with a 1:07.94. Freshman Jen MacLauchlan came within one-hundredths of a second of matching her season best mark in the 100 back with a 1:00.43.

Both the men's and women's 200 medley relay teams posted top marks to open the swimming portion of the meet, with the women's team of Jen MacLauchlan, Marianne Lionell, Kristine Bunker and Deanna Raedel swimming to a 1:51.07, while the men's squad of Ari Markle, Marko Milenkovic, Johan Norling and Adam Wroblewski posted a 1:36.93.

The two CSU freestyle relay teams then closed out the meet as they had opened it, with the women's team of Lesley Jones, Alexandra Bagi, Kristina Nagy and McKechnie swimming to a 1:43.05, while the men's team of Milenkovic, Daniel Thomasson, Markle, and Schantz posted a 1:27.10.

"Given the fact that we put in two tough weeks of conditioning prior to this meet, I thought we swam really well tonight," men's head coach Wally Morton said.

"We put some of our swimmers in events that they don't normally swim and they stepped up to the challenge. We found out that we have some guys who can swim well in different events. I am very pleased with the effort we had tonight."

"I thought we swam a very good meet coming off of a tough loss last week to Youngstown State," women's head coach Mike Lehto commented. "They took that meet as a learning experience and used it tonight.

"I am happy to see a lot of our freshmen score points tonight. It is a good sign since we are so young. But our veterans have been there too, and will continue to be there throughout the year."

With the wins, the men's team moves to 7-2 on the year, while the women improve to 6-3.

Cleveland State returns to action on Tuesday (Nov. 22) when they travel to Columbus for a 6:00 p.m. meet with Ohio State.
