Swim Teams Earn Sweep Of Niagara

CLEVELAND - The Cleveland State men's and women's swimming and diving teams gathered a sweep of visiting Niagara on Saturday afternoon at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium. Saturday was also Senior Day for the Vikings, as 10 Vikings ended their home careers. The women won, 119-71, while the men picked up a 98-55 win.

For the women's team, Wendy Peel, Marianne Lionell and Samantha Jones each picked up a pair of wins on the day. Peel won the 400 individual medley in 4:49.18 and the 500 freestyle in 5:21.36, while Lionell captured her wins in the 200 freestyle in 1:59.44 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.72. Jones won back-to-back events, winning the 100 freestyle in 54.23 and the 100 backstroke in 1:01.40.

Tina Abbott and Kirsty McKechnie also picked up wins for Cleveland State on Saturday. Abbott won the 1000 freestyle in 11:14.11, while McKechnie won the 100 butterfly in 1:02.06.

In the men's meet, Tom Stacy and Chris Jones were the only double-winners for Cleveland State against an undermanned Niagara squad. Stacy won the 100 butterfly in 54.70 and the 100 backstroke in 59.65. Jones, meanwhile, captured both diving events, scoring 287.78 on 1m and 271.80 on 3m.

Warren Vickers also picked up a win for the Vikings, winning the 50 freestyle in 21.25. He also teamed with fellow seniors Marco Markgraaff, Aidan McLaughlin and Lyle Wilkens to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:25.43.

Other wins for CSU were by Daniel Thomasson in the 1000 freestyle (9:47.52), Luke Wilkens in the 200 freestyle (1:48.60) and Ryan Klaus in the 100 freestyle (48.13).

The Vikings will now have nearly two weeks off before heading to Notre Dame on Fri., Feb. 6, for a meet with the Fighting Irish.
