Women's Swimming Fast Again On Third Day Of Championships

CLEVELAND - The Cleveland State women's team put up another solid effort at the Horizon League Championships on Friday (Feb. 24), as the Vikings posted a school record and several season-best times. CSU continues to hold down the fifth-place spot in the tournament with a score of 241.5, nearly 100 points better than sixth-place Youngstown State.

Freshman Katie Bellew continued to be a force in the Horizon League, swimming to a school-record 57.50 in the 100 fly for a second-place showing. Junior Marianne Lionell added a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.13, while senior Kirsty McKechnie tallied a fourth-place showing with a season-best 4:35.75 in the 400 IM.

"We continued to have a lot of strong swims," women's head coach Mike Lehto said. "Katie put up one of our best showings in the tournament, and Kirsty came very close to a school record as well."

Senior Wendy Peel added strong showing in the 100 fly, winning the consolation heat with a season-best time of 1:00.44, while sophomore Deanna Raedel added a personal-best 1:09.86 in the 100 breaststroke.

"It's been a solid effort from top to bottom," Lehto continued. "Everyone has come out and swam at their best this week, and that is really all you can hope for in a championship meet."

The Horizon League Championships conclude on Satuday (Feb. 25) with swimming prelims at 10:30 a.m., diving prelims at 3:00 p.m. and finals at 6:00 p.m. at Busbey Natatorium.
