SETTING THE SCENE: Cleveland State takes to the road in Horizon League play for the final time this season when the Vikings travel to Milwaukee on Friday, Oct. 19 for a 2:00 p.m. CDT match against the Panthers. CSU then returns home on Sunday, Oct. 21 to start a three-match homestand against Valparaiso beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Krenzler Field.

REVIEWING LAST WEEK: The Vikings won on the road for the first time ever in league play last week. Here is a synopsis of that contest:

Match 14: CSU 2, Youngstown State 0 (Oct. 12, Youngstown, Ohio)
Jennifer Wieand scored just 12:32 into the contest and Jessica McCloy added her first career goal in the second half goal as the Vikings won for the first time ever in Horizon League play. Emily Arpidone and Marley Greiner each recorded their first assists of the year. Kelly Zinkiewich made six saves in posting her second career shutout.

PREVIEWING THE VIKINGS: As the fourth season of Viking women's soccer winds down, CSU has shown much improvement from the 3-17 season of a year ago. With eight starters and 15 leterwinners back from last year's team that won a school-record three matches, head coach Derrek Falor has the most depth and experience in program history. The strength of the squad is on offense where the tandem of senior Shayna Back (5 goals, 3 assists, 13 points), junior Jennifer Wieand (7-2-16) and freshman Sylvia Olsby (2-3-7) have helped the Vikings to significantly increase their scoring. Heather Clapacs (1-1-3) leads the midfielders, being joined by newcomers Nicole Howard and Marley Greiner to give CSU a solid group of playmakers. Depth on defense has been a problem in each of the last three seasons, but Falor has as many as eight skilled defenders to call upon this year. Led by returning starters Amber Rasmussen , Maggie Pugliese and Abbie Kakias and transfer Emily Arpidone (Virginia Commonwealth), the defense has good experience to build on. CSU has a new face in goal as freshman Kelly Zinkiewich (84 saves) has started every contest.

SCORING RECORD FALLS: The two goals against Youngstown State last week gives the Vikings 18 goals in 14 matches this year, breaking the school record for goals in a season. CSU set the mark last season with 16 goals in 20 matches. The Vikings have at least four more matches to go to in the season to continue to improve on that mark.

ANOTHER STREAK FALLS: CSU's win at Youngstown State on Friday night (Oct. 12) marked the first time since the program began in 2004 that the Vikings won a Horizon League match. CSU headed into the year with a 0-23-1 mark, with the lone tie coming at YSU in 2005, and proceeded to drop its first three league matches of the year. The Vikings are now 1-26-1 all-time in league action.

SO MUCH FOR NOT BEING ABLE TO WIN ON THE ROAD: The Vikings entered the 2007 season having never won a match on the road in the three-year history of the program. That 32-match streak -- CSU was 0-31-1 on the road -- came to an end on Sept. 4 when CSU won 5-4 in overtime at IPFW in the first road match of the season. Since then, the Vikings have beaten both Delaware State and Youngstown State on the road and head to their final regular season road match with a 3-5 mark away from home this season.

VIKINGS AREN'T IN THE CELLAR: The win at Youngstown State last week allowed the Vikings to leave the Horizon League celler for the first time ever. CSU finished in eighth place in the eight-team league in both 2004 and 2006 and by virtue of a tie with YSU in 2005, finished tied with the Penguins for seventh place. The Vikings were the No. 8 seed in the league tourney all three seasons.

WIEAND SETS SEASON SCORING MARKS: A first half goal against Youngstown State on Friday allowed Viking junior Jennifer Wieand to break the school record for goals (7) and points (16) in a season, which was originally set last year by Shayna Back, who had six goals and 14 points.

FIRST POINTS FOR THE NEWCOMERS: The Youngstown State match featured a different offensive look for the Vikings as three of the four players who registered points in the match did so for the first time this season. Freshman Emily Arpidone earned her first career assist on Jennifer Wieand's first half goal and Jessica McCloy and Marley Greiner teamed up with McCloy heading home a second half cornerkick.

ZINKIEWICH APPROACHES SAVE MILESTONE: With 84 saves in the first 14 matches this season, freshman goalkeeper Kelly Zinkiewich ranks fourth in school history in saves in a season. She needs five saves to move past Allie Zajaros and into third place and 16 saves to become the third CSU keeper to register 100 saves in a season.

. . . AND TIES SHUTOUT RECORD: The 2-0 win at Youngstown State last week allowed Kelly Zinkiewich to tie the school record for shutouts in a season with two. Zinkiewich, who also shutout Delaware State earlier this year, now shares the record with Erin Withrow, who had a pair of shutouts last year.

NEXT UP: Cleveland State remains at home to close the 2007 regular season with matches against Detroit (Oct. 26) and Butler (Dec. 28).
