Lock Haven Trips Up Vikings, 25-15

Feb. 4, 2006

Lock Haven, Pa. - Lock Haven spotted itself to an early 9-0 lead through the first two bouts of the evening and didn't look back as the Bald Eagles handed the Vikings a 25-15 defeat at Thomas Fieldhouse on Saturday (Feb. 4) night.

Cleveland State falls to 5-5 overall and 1-1 in the Eastern Wrestling League, while Lock Haven moves to 5-10 and 1-1 in the EWL.

CSU had some opportunities to get wins, but Lock Haven kept them at bay each time. Sophomore Victer Crenshaw went up 6-1 on 17th-ranked Josh Martin at 157 pounds, scoring two takedowns and back points, but Martin only needed one takedown of his own and to register a pin at 2:05 of the bout.

Junior David Gilkey (174) and senior Ishmal Williams (197) also had opportunities after getting ahead, but both wrestlers ended up on the short end.

"We couldn't stay in the bouts and finish them off at times," head coach Jack Effner said. "We had some opportunities, getting up early in bouts, but went flat after that and ended up losing."

Sophomores Mike Hurley and Tim Scarl got the Vikings their first points of the match. Hurley put the Vikings on the board at 141, registering a 9-5 decision over after scoring a late third-period takedown to break a 5-5 tie. Scarl built up an 8-3 lead in the first period of the 165 bout with four takedowns and held on down the stretch for an 11-6 win.

Senior Ron Howard, No. 19 in the nation according to the NWCA/Intermat Poll, continued his winning ways at 184 with an 8-4 decision over Derrick Morgan. Howard leads the team with a 21-7 record on the year.

Freshman Rashard Goff closed out the night on a high note, recording a fall of Tim Meyers with pin 34 seconds into the overtime period of the 285 bout.

"Lock Haven is wrestling real well," Effner continued. "They were doing everything right tonight and we were flat. We gave up the quick six and didn't have anyone to set the spark for us. We didn't do what we were capable of doing."

The Vikings head to Bloomsburg on Sunday (Feb. 5) for a 1:00 p.m. battle with the Huskies.
