Quick Sets: Cleveland State hosts 2002 NCAA participant Robert Morris before hitting the road this weekend for conference matches at Butler and Wright State...the Vikings are just 2-5 in their last seven matches, but three of those loses have been in five games...CSU is 1-3 this year in five game matches...following this weekend's road trip, the Vikings will play five consecutive matches in the friendly confines of Woodling Gymnasium.
Vikings Have Busy Week: Cleveland State plays its first mid-week match since Sept. 16 when the Vikings host Robert Morris on Tuesday. CSU is 22-0 all-time against the Colonials, including a five-game road victory last season. The Vikings then travel to Butler and Wright State where historically they have not had as much success. CSU went 0-2 on the same road trip last season and is 4-15 all-time versus the Bulldogs and 12-26 against the Raiders.
Head Coach Chuck Voss: Head coach Chuck Voss is in his fourth year at the helm of the Vikings. Voss has a 48-57 (.457) mark at Cleveland State and an 81-93 (.466) overall record in six seasons. Last year, he guided the Vikings to their first winning season since 1983. In addition, the 18 victories the 2002 squad posted were the most since the 1988 team won 20 contests.
Dynamic Duo Dominant Over Weekend: Juniors Jamie Bouyer and Kelly Crain were nearly unstoppable in Cleveland State's matches last week against Loyola and Illinois-Chicago. The pair combined for 57 kills, a .441 hitting percentage, 30 digs and 29 blocks as CSU earned a split. The pair had more blocks than entire Loyola and UIC rosters (16).
Bouyer Knocking At Door: Middle hitter Jamie Bouyer enters the week needing just 21 kills to reach 1,000 for her career. Only seven other players in the previous 30 seasons of CSU volleyball have reached the 1,000-kill plateau. Bouyer currently leads the Horizon League in hitting percentage (.404) and blocks per game (1.50) and is second in points per game (5.15).
Triple Your Pleasure: Setter Kelly Crain had a career night on Friday against Loyola. She posted 10 kills, 63 assists and 13 digs for her first triple-double in two-and-a-half years at CSU. Jamie Bouyer, who had a match-high 23 kills, almost matched Crain's feat, finishing two digs and a block short of what would have been her first triple-double.
Great Wall Of Cleveland: It's no wonder that Viking opponents are hitting just .182 this year - they're having trouble getting the ball across the net. At 2.89 blocks per game, Cleveland State currently leads the Horizon League, well ahead of second-place Youngstown State (2.68). Individually, Jamie Bouyer (1.50), Danielle Siefker (1.27) and Nickole Kennedy (1.10) rank first, third and sixth among the league's blocking leaders. This season, the Vikings have been out-blocked only four times in 19 matches. Over the weekend, CSU posted 27 blocks, while Loyola and UIC combined for just eight.
A Little On Last Week: The Vikings nearly ended a 10-match losing streak to Loyola on Friday night, before succumbing in five games. CSU had a chance to win in four, but let a 24-19 lead slip away in the third frame. Jamie Bouyer led all players with 23 kills and nine blocks, while Kelly Crain recorded her first career triple-double (10K, 63A, 13D). Jenna Maddocks (16K, 15D) and Emily Clark (10K, 20D) finished with double-doubles of their own. The Vikings rebounded nicely the next day with a sweep of Illinois-Chicago. Bouyer once again led the way with 15 kills, a .500 hitting percentage and 11 blocks, while Crain tallied nine kills, a .615 hitting percentage and 30 assists.
Clark Energizes Lineup: In the four matches since stepping in after a back injury forced sophomore Alisa Hatcher out of the lineup, sophomore Emily Clark has provided a spark at outside hitter. In that span, she has 36 kills and 49 digs including career-highs in both categories, posting 12 kills versus both UW-Milwaukee and UW-Green Bay and 20 digs against Loyola.
Siefker In The Middle Of It All: Freshman middle hitter Danielle Siefker has left quite an impression on opponents so far this season. The Kalida, Ohio native was named to the all-tournament team after hitting .500 (30-3-54) with 26 blocks to lead the Vikings to a 4-0 mark at the season-opening Western New York Tournament. On the year, she is third in Horizon League with 1.27 bpg and is 10th in the conference with a .286 hitting percentage.
Bouyer, Crain Climb Career Charts: Despite having played just two-and-a-half seasons, juniors Jamie Bouyer and Kelly Crain are already leaving their mark on the Cleveland State career lists. Bouyer ranks second in block assists (285), tied for seventh in solo blocks (52) and fifth in total blocks (337). Crain is currently third on the assist rankings with 2,838 and has a good shot of passing Stacie Cunningham (3,320) for second place by the end of the year.
New-Look Woodling Equals Same Result: The court may have looked different but the outcome was the same. When Cleveland State swept Oakland on Sept. 12, it marked the eighth consecutive home-opening victory (six of which have been sweeps) for the Vikings dating back to 1996.
Loose Ends: Sophomore outside hitter Jenna Maddocks entered the Loyola match with career-highs of seven kills and 21 attempts, a little over two hours those numbers were upgraded to 16 kills and 48 attempts...the Vikings finished 3-0 against the Big East this year...in losses to Eastern Michigan and Northern Illinois, CSU was on the losing end of back-to-back five game matches for the first time since 1989.
Up Next: The Vikings host Bowling Green on Tuesday, Oct. 14 in the first of five consecutive home matches. CSU then welcomes league opponent Youngstown State to Woodling on Friday, Oct. 17.
