YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Cleveland State maintained at least a share of first place in the Horizon League with a 30-25, 30-23, 30-26 victory at Youngstown State on Friday night. The streaking Vikings won their sixth league contest in a row to improve to 8-2, while posting their ninth victory in 11 matches overall to move to 16-7 on the year. CSU's 10th straight win over the Penguins drops YSU to 7-16, 0-10.
The Vikings' school-record eighth league win (two better than last year's mark) assures CSU of keeping pace with UW-Milwaukee, which is currently playing at Butler.
Cleveland State out-hit the Penguins .264 to .205, while also holding advantages in digs (55-48), aces (6-3) and blocks (9.5-8.0).
Nickole Kennedy paced the Vikings with a match-high 14 kills and a .458 hitting percentage. Danielle Siefker added 12 kills, a .500 hitting percentage and a match-best six blocks, while Jenna Maddocks notched 11 kills. Alisa Hatcher led all players with 19 digs, while Emily Clark added 15 digs of her own.
"Our ball control was the difference in the match tonight," CSU head coach Chuck Voss said. "Our passing was very good and Alisa did a nice job defensively. We were able to feed the ball to Danielle in better spots and she responded with a solid performance."
Abby Ettenhofer led the way for the Penguins with 13 kills, a .423 hitting percentage and four blocks, while Katie Shea finished with 12 kills. Amanda Cindric notched a team-high 13 digs.
Cleveland State is in action again next weekend as the Vikings close out their home schedule with a pair of crucial Horizon League matches. On Friday, Nov. 4, CSU will host UW-Green Bay, followed by a 4:00 p.m. contest with UW-Milwaukee the next afternoon. The six Viking seniors will be recognized in a special ceremony on Saturday.
