CLEVELAND - Cleveland State saw its six-match winning streak come to an end at the hands of Bowling Green on Tuesday night in Woodling Gymnasium. After dropping the first game, 30-25, the Falcons swept the next three, 30-26, 30-21, 32-30, to pull out the victory. With the loss, the Vikings fall to 15-7, while BGSU improves to 14-9.
The Falcons became just the fifth team to out-hit CSU all season, posting a .194 (66-28-196) to .156 (58-29-186) advantage. The Vikings held slim advantages in aces (8 to 4) and blocks (13.5 to 12.0), while the digs were even at 90 each.
Jenna Maddocks paced CSU with 13 kills, while Nickole Kennedy and Danielle Siefker added 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Mel Snyder narrowly missed her first career triple-double, finishing with 44 assists, 14 digs and eight kills. Emily Clark and Alisa Hatcher tied for match honors with 22 digs apiece.
The Vikings didn't have answer for Bowling Green's Kendra Halm, who led all players with 17 kills, a .500 hitting percentage and eight blocks. Chrissy Gothke notched a triple-double with 46 assists, a team-high 19 digs and 11 kills. Madeline Means added a double-double with 10 digs and 10 kills.
"Bowling Green played very well and we just didn't have an answer for them at times," CSU head coach Chuck Voss said. "Emily was fantastic defensively and Danielle really attacked the ball tonight like she's capable of, but we need some leaders to step up for us. We swung a little tentatively after the first game and that carried over to the rest of the match."
After finishing their homestand with a 5-1 mark, the first-place Vikings (7-2 HL) return to Horizon League play with a 7:00 p.m. match at Youngstown State (7-15, 0-9 HL) on Friday, Oct. 28.
