CLEVELAND - The Cleveland State volleyball team dominated play at the net on its way to a 31-29, 30-26, 30-27 victory over Toledo (8-14) Tuesday night in Woodling Gymnasium. In posting their 11th sweep of the season, the Vikings (15-10) recorded a season-high 16 blocks and out-hit the Rockets .279 to .127. CSU won its fifth consecutive match at home in addition to finishing its non-conference slate with a 13-5 mark.
The first game featured 20 ties and 11 lead changes. Trailing 29-28, CSU sophomore opposite Nickole Kennedy (Sunbury, Ohio/Big Walnut) and sophomore outside Emily Clark (Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) rattled off consecutive kills, which were followed by a block to close out the game.
The Vikings used a 7-0 run in the second frame to erase an early 11-7 deficit. CSU hit .333 in the game and recorded seven blocks, while junior middle hitter Jamie Bouyer (Bedford Heights, Ohio/Chanel) slammed down seven of her match-high 16 kills.
CSU looked like it might pull away in the third game, using a 5-1 burst to go up 17-13. However, Toledo battled back to knot the score at 21-21, but three Bouyer kills down the stretch proved to be too much for the Rockets to overcome.
"I thought Danielle Siefker stood out the whole match and Jenna Maddocks gave us a boost in the third game with her energy level," CSU head coach Chuck Voss said. "Blocking has been our key all year and it was again tonight."
Kennedy finished with nine kills, a .444 hitting percentage and seven blocks, while freshman middle hitter Danielle Siefker (Kalida, Ohio/Kalida) tallied nine kills, a .500 hitting percentage and six blocks. Bouyer added 10 blocks for her third double-double of the season.
Freshman outside hitter Kate Bean led Toledo with 12 kills and 11 digs, while junior outside Rachel Mohler added 12 kills.
Cleveland State (2-5 Horizon League) hosts the top two teams in the conference this weekend. Friday, the Vikings square off against UW-Green Bay (16-5, 6-1 HL) at 7:00 p.m., followed by a 2:00 p.m. match the next day versus UW-Milwaukee (18-3, 7-0 HL).
