BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Cleveland State extended its win streak to eight straight matches with a 3-0 sweep at Bowling Green on Tuesday night in nonconference action at Anderson Area.
Match scores were 25-23, 25-23, 25-21.
CSU, which had defeated the Falcons in five sets earlier this season, improved to 19-5 overall, while BGSU fell to 7-14.
Kara Koch and Liz Fazio paced the Vikings with 10 kills apiece, while Amy Benz and Beth Greulich added eight each as CSU hit .347 (45-11-98) for the match.
Jordan Goad handed out 28 assists with eight digs, while Maggie Bonomini chipped in a team-high nine digs and six assists.
The Vikings fell behind early in the first set, 12-7, and still trailed by five points (15-10) after a Falcon kill. However, an 8-3 CSU run, which concluded with back-to-back kills from Goad, evened the set at 18-18.
The teams traded points until CSU broke a 22-22 tie on kills from Barhorst and Koch to take a 24-22 lead. The Falcons received a kill from Noelle Spitler to pull within 24-23, but a kill by Koch gave the Vikings the set.
Set two was the complete opposite as the Vikings raced out to a quick 10-6 lead and would never trail in the set. However, the Falcons did not go down easily, rallying to within one point (14-13) only to watch CSU use consecutive kills by Benz to push the lead back to three points (16-13).
BGSU would again pull within one point at 22-21, but once again the Vikings staved off the threat as a BGSU ball handling error and a kill from Megan Barhorst gave CSU a 24-21 lead and three chances at set point. The Falcons fought off the first two, but a kill by Fazio gave CSU a 2-0 lead.
CSU took a quick 4-2 lead in the third set, but a 5-1 run by the Falcons gave the home team a 7-5 lead. BGSU pushed the lead to as many as four points at 17-13, forcing a CSU timeout from which the Vikings came out and scored the next six points, including two kills from Benz, to assume a 19-17 lead.
The Vikings would never trail from there.
CSU continues its roadtrip with a 7:00 p.m. contest at Wright State on Friday, Oct. 16.
