CLEVELAND - Cleveland State hit a school-record .527 (54-6-91) en route to sweeping Oakland, 30-11, 30-10, 30-26, in non-conference action on Tuesday night in Woodling Gymnasium. Four Vikings finished with double-figure kills as CSU opened a six-match homestand by improving to 11-6 on the year. The loss drops the Golden Grizzlies to 3-18.
The damage could have been much worse as the Vikings hit .750 (19-1-24) in the opening frame and .850 (17-0-20) in the second game, before cooling off in game three (.277/18-5-47). The previous record for hitting percentage was set against Robert Morris on Sept. 17, 2004 when CSU hit .418 (57-11-110).
CSU also set a record by allowing just 10 points in the second game, accomplishing the feat for third time since the NCAA went to the rally score format in 2001.
"We played real consistently for two-and-a-half games before we let up a little," CSU head coach Chuck Voss said. "Heading into tonight, we wanted to accomplish some things to get ready for a very important weekend. I thought we passed very well for the most part and did an excellent job of getting our middles involved."
Danielle Siefker and Emily Clark paced the Vikings with 12 kills each, Siefker doing so on 19 swings without an error for a .632 hitting percentage. Jenni Ramminger added 11 kills, while Nickole Kennedy hit .714, ripping 10 kills on 14 attempts without an error.
Adrienne Leone led Oakland with nine kills as the Grizzlies hit just .096 (28-19-94) for the match.
Cleveland State returns to action on Friday, Oct. 14 when the Vikings host Loyola at 7:00 p.m. The two teams are currently tied for third in the Horizon League at 3-2.
