Cleveland - The Cleveland State softball team picked up a pair of wins on the second day of the Horizon League Championship at Viking Field, shutting out Detroit 2-0 in the opener and topping UW-Green Bay 4-3 in the second game.

In the first game of the day, senior pitcher Jessica Miller (Medina , Ohio/Medina) stymied the Titans' bats, allowing only one hit while striking out three and walking one.

The Vikings plated their first run on a doubles by senior catcher Stephanie Taylor (Wintersville, Ohio/Indian Creek) and Miller in the fifth. Taylor then lead off the sixth with another double, moved to third on sac bunt by Kortney Spidell and scored on a fielders choice by Anna Hubert.

In the second game against the Phoenix, the Vikings jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first but promptly fell behind in the bottom half as three hits and a pair of errors gave way to three UWGB runs.

Cleveland State chipped away, however, scoring a run in the third and two in the sixth for a 4-3 advantage. Freshman pitcher Grace Luginbuhl (Lima, Ohio/Bath) worked 5.1 scoreless innings in relief, yielding only two hits and no walks while striking out four.

The win sent the Vikings on to play Loyola in the final game of the night, where CSU held a 6-2 5th inning lead before the game was suspended due to lightning. The game will be completed Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m., weather permitting.
