BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - A new era of cross country at Cleveland State began on Saturday as the Vikings finished seventh out of nine teams competing at the Mel Brodt Invitational. CSU finished three out of three amongst Division I teams, but just 13 points out of second.

"Our team ran very well today," head coach Joe Jaketic said. "A lot of them were new to collegiate cross country and did a great job for their first meet."

The Vikings were led by team captain Sherri Douglas, who finished in 10th place amongst Division I teams, with a 19:58. She was followed closely by freshman Julie Piotrowski, who ran a 19:59.

"I thought the race went very well and we surprised some people," Douglas said. "It was nice to finally get out there and race after all the practicing for the last three weeks. We all just had a lot of fun."

Lesley Jones and Madeline Singer finished 20th and 21st with a time of 22:51 and 23:05, respectively. The Vikings finished with Amanda Whtimer and Shilah Pratt who finished 23:45 and 26:07, respectively.

The Vikings, who one year ago, couldn't field enough runners to post a team score put together a solid race to begin their season and have a lot to look forward to during the course of the year. Cleveland State finished 13 points behind conference foe, Youngstown State who finished fourth in the Horizon League last season.

CSU will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 17 at the Central Collegiate Invitational in Toledo, Ohio. The race is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
