BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Cleveland State women's tennis team opened play at the Bowling Green Invitational Friday, led by Kara Sherwood and Ellen Folkers who both advanced to the finals of their respective singles draws. Folkers and Sherwood each went 3-0 on the day, as they also teamed up for a Flight 2 doubles win.
"We had a solid day of competition today, led by the duo of Ellen and Kara," interim assistant coach Frank Polito said. "Ellen had a great day, and showed a lot of confidence after coming back from being down in her singles matches to pick up the wins. Kara also played some solid tennis all day long, really showing how she is capable of playing."
Sherwood, who is in the Flight 4 singles draw, picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win over Kristine Lindal of IPFW and a 6-4, 6-3 win over Kally Alkire of Xavier to reach the finals of her bracket. Folkers earned her victories over Xavier's Lizzie Oosterbaan (3-6, 6-4, 10-5) and Duquesne's Alexa Miller to advance to the finals of the Flight 5 singles draw.
Alex Power and Nicole Janek each recorded victories in their opening round matches for the Vikings, Power in the Flight 2 draw (6-3, 6-4 over Ana Rajkovic, Miami (OH)) and Janek in the Flight 6 draw (6-2, 6-2 over Paula Gruber, Duquesne). The final singles victory on the day came from Alex Bush, who is in the finals of the back draw in Flight 1. After dropping her first round match, Bush posted a 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 victory over Bobbi Modesto from IUPUI.
Folkers and Sherwood recorded the lone doubles victory for Cleveland State, advancing to the semifinals of the Flight 2 doubles draw with an 8-6 victory over a duo from IUPUI.
The Vikings will close out play at the BGSU Invite tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 22). Action is scheduled to start at 9:15 a.m., but may be changed due to the possibility of bad weather in the Bowling Green area.
