BOWLING GREEN ,Ohio - Kara Sherwood and Ellen Folkers each posted victories on Saturday at the BGSU Invitational, claiming the singles titles in their respective flights to lead the Cleveland State women's tennis team. The duo also teamed up for doubles play, advancing to the championship match of their flight.

Saturday's action was cut short due to rain in the Bowling Green area, with most of the back-draw matches being cancelled. The rain also caused some of the matches to take place indoors at Shadow Valley Tennis and Fitness in Maumee, Ohio.

"I thought we had a good day on the courts today, Ellen and Kara played very well and I am proud of their efforts, bringing home two singles titles," interim assistant coach Frank Polito said. "We had some issues with the weather and had to move around during the middle of some matches, which isn't the easiest thing to do, but everyone responded well and fought hard to finish out the matches."

After posting two victories and advancing to the championship match of the Flight 4 Singles draw yesterday, Sherwood earned a 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 victory over Hannah Wille of Cincinnati to claim the singles title. After losing the first set, Sherwood was down 3-0 in the second set when her match was moved indoors, where she was able to come back and earn the tiebreak victory.

Folkers did much of the same, as she advanced to the final match with yesterday's play and claimed a 7-5, 1-6, 11-9 victory over Theresa Neumeyr of IPFW for the Flight 5 singles title. Her match was also moved indoors midway through, finishing the first and second sets outside and playing the tiebreak indoors.

The rest of Cleveland State's action Saturday came in doubles play, with Folkers and Sherwood making it to the finals of the Flight 2 doubles draw and Maria Lazaris advancing to the finals of the Flight 4 draw. Sherwood and Folkers, who picked up one win yesterday, claimed an 8-3 victory over Toledo in the semifinals before falling to IPFW, 8-4 in the championship match. Lazaris teamed with Emily Mazzola of Toledo for the Flight 4 doubles draw, earning a bye in the opening round and claiming an 8-5 victory over Xavier in the semifinals before falling to Bowling Green (8-3) in the championship.

Cleveland State will compete at its final fall tournament before the ITA Regionals in two weekends, traveling to East Lansing, Mich. for the Michigan State Invitational. The MSU Invite is a three-day tournament, with action running from Friday (Oct. 5) through Sunday (Oct. 7).
