CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Cleveland State women's tennis team opened play at the ITA Midwest Regional Thursday, with Kara Sherwood picking up a first round win in the qualifying singles draw.

"I thought we played okay today throughout our singles matches, with Kara being the highlight after winning her first round match," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "She got better and better throughout her second round match, but unfortunately wasn't able to pull out the victory. We definitely wanted to qualify someone into the main draw, but hopefully we can come out strong in our doubles play tomorrow and go from there."

Sherwood earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Marcy Huck of IPFW in her opening round contest, before falling to Horizon League opponent, Maddy Soule (Milwaukee), 6-2, 6-4 in the second round.

Along with Sherwood, Alex Power and Alex Bush were also competing in the qualifying draw for the Vikings. Both faced Horizon League opponents in their first round matches, Bush falling to Natahsa Kuvakina of UIC (6-3, 6-3) and Power falling to Detroit's Valeriya Kulikouskaya (6-4, 6-2).

Action at the ITA Midwest Regional will continue tomorrow (Friday, Oct. 19), with the final round of the qualifying singles draw and the first round of the doubles draw.
