EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Cleveland State women's tennis team completed the first day at the Spartan Invite Friday evening, led by senior Mengdi Liu who recorded a singles and doubles win on day one.
"We didn't play our best tennis today, but we had tough matches all around and everyone really fought hard throughout the entire day," interim assistant coach Frank Polito said. "Kara and Alex (Bush) picked up a good doubles win for us today and they also played well in their singles matches, but unfortunately couldn't come away with the victories."
Liu, who is playing in the Draw F Singles bracket, picked up a 5-7, 6-0, 6-1 win over Victoria Marchant of Dayton in her opening round match Friday. She also teamed with Ball State's Ayaka Terashi to compete in the Draw C Doubles bracket, earning an 8-1 victory over Dayton's Marchant and Claire McNulty.
Alex Power also posted a singles victory for the Vikings on day one, picking up a 7-5, 6-4 win over Sammi Hornbarger of Dayton in the first round of the Draw B Singles bracket. Power began her quarterfinal singles match before the rain came in Friday evening, and is currently up a set, but trailing 4-3 in the second set. They will continue this match tomorrow morning.
Kara Sherwood and Alex Bush picked up CSU's second doubles victory of the day, claiming an 8-1 win over a duo from Toledo in the Draw B Doubles bracket.
Action will continue tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 6) at the Spartan Invite, beginning at 8:00 a.m. As of now, they are scheduled to play a round of doubles and two rounds of singles.
