Lionell, Carr Named Athletes Of The Week

Nov. 9, 2005

After continuing their dominant seasons last weekend, Cleveland State women's swimmer Marianne Lionell and men's diver Thatcher Carr have been honored with the Horizon League's weekly awards.

Lionell posted three wins over the weekend against Wright State (Nov. 4) and Xavier (Nov. 5) to claim the Women's Swimmer of the Week award. The Sodertajle, Sweden native posted a team-best 2:28.89 in the 200 breast against the Raiders before scoring team-bests in the 200 IM (2:12.97) and in the 100 free (53.94). She also swam the lead leg for the winning 400 free relay team against Xavier.

Lionell currently holds CSU top season times in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles as well as the 100 and 200 breaststrokes and 200 IM. It is the first time this season that she has been honored by the league and the third time in her career.

"In the first meet on the road, you hope someone steps up to lead the team, and Marianne did," head women's swimming coach Mike Lehto said. "She showed her leadership ability this weekend. She really helped us to be able to come back and swim to our capabilities on Saturday after a disappointing meet on Friday."

Carr receives Men's Diver of the Week honor after posting a pair of wins last week against Wright State. He dove to a 318.75 at one meter and a 317.25 at three meter for his fifth and sixth wins of the season.

Carr has been the league's most dominant men's diver since joining the Vikings last spring. He is the current CSU record holder in both the one and three meter spring boards and has won in all 20 of the events that he has competed in, including a six-for-six showing this season.

"We worked on some new dives against Wright State so he didn't have some of his best scores," head diving coach Rich Karban said, "but, as a whole, I expect him to do what he needs to do to get the win, and he expects that from himself, too."

The women's swimming team heads to Youngstown State on Thursday (Nov. 10) for a 6:00 p.m. meet. The men's team is idle until Nov. 16 when both Viking teams host Baldwin-Wallace, Gannon, John Carroll and Oberlin at Busbey Natatorium at 4:00 p.m.
