Swimming And Diving Opens With Strong Start At Cincinnati

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Cleveland State swimmimg and diving teams opened their season on Friday night at the University of Cincinnati's Keating Aquatics Center.

The Vikings were part of a tri-meet with Cincinnati and Xavier.

For the men, several had top performances including 11 first-place finishes in various events, led by Philipp Sikatzki and Danny Roberts, both picking up where they left off a season ago. Sikatzki had top individual times in the 100 Back (49.34), 100 Free (46.15) and 100 IM (51.65) and also held a leg in CSU's winning 200 Medley Relay team that posted a final time of 1:31.51. Roberts finished at the top of the group in both the 1M and the 3M dives with scores of 301.35 and 263.50 respectively.

The night was also highlighted by the performance of numerous freshmen competing in their first collegiate meet. Freshmen Szymon Golczyk, Tommi Wolst and MacJilton Lewis all had at least one top finish apiece. Golczyk, also a part of the winning 200 Medley team, took first place in the 200 Fly (1:50.45) and 100 Fly (48.87). Like Golczyk and Sikatzki, Wolst was a part of the 200 Medley team and also finished atop the leaderboard in the 100 Breast (56.11) and the 200 Back (1:51.01). Lewis won the 500 Free with a time of 4:28.85.

Declan McLaughlin was the final leg of the winning 200 Medley team.

On the women's side, freshman Molly McNamara finished atop two individual events; the 200 Fly (2:06.10) and the 100 Fly (57.41). Samantha Sposet and Tori Taffner both had strong diving performances as Sposet finished third in the 1M Dive (226.40) and fourth in the 3M Dive (221.35) and Tori Taffner finished second in the 3M Dive (228.45).

The swimming and diving teams will be back in action this weekend when the women head to Youngstown State on Friday (Oct. 23) and both teams will host Gannon the following Saturday (Oct. 24), beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Busbey Natatorium.
