Cleveland State Softball Splits At Detroit

April 27, 2002

The Cleveland State softball team salvaged a split at the University of Detroit Mercy on Saturday, dumping the host Titans 9-2 in the second game of a doubleheader after being shutout 4-0 in the opener.

The Vikings, 17-22-1 overall and 6-6 in the Horizon League, stranded nine runners in the first contest and managed just four hits against Titan starter Krista Peters (8-6) . UDM's lead-off hitter, Peters helped her own cause by going 2-for-3, including a double and an RBI. In addition, first baseman Dayna Rodrigues went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a pair of two-baggers. Junior Jessica Miller (6-9) took the loss for CSU.

The Vikes got on the board in the first inning of Game 2 as lead-off hitter Tiffany Stocker (Sherrodsville, Ohio/Conotton Valley) earned a walk off of UDM's Anna Ollgaard. Stocker, who ranked sixth nationally last week in stolen bases, then swiped her 27th of the year and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Jackie Cornelius (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills). After Michelle Beightol (Akron, Ohio/Springfield) lined out to short, Jackie Miller (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) singled to right center, scoring Stocker.

However, the second inning set the tone as a pair of Titan errors led to five Viking runs.

The Vikes also scored three runs in the fourth inning as Jackie Miller cracked a two-run homer for her third round-tripper of the year and Anna Hubert (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton), who reached on an error, subsequently scored later on a wild pitch.

The Titans scored both of their runs, which were unearned, in the fifth inning.

Freshman Kortney Spidell (Strasburg, Ohio/Strasburg-Franklin) threw a complete game, her 17th of the season, for the Vikings to improve to 9-8. Spidell gave up six hits and struck out five while walking just one in the victory.

The Vikings will travel to Wright State University on Sunday, April 28 to take on the Raiders at 1 p.m. in their final Horizon League matchup of the season. CSU concludes regular season play on Wednesday, May 1 at 7 p.m. against Kent State University at Firestone Stadium in Akron.
