CSU Softball Sweeps Youngstown State In League Action

April 24, 2002

CLEVELAND - Taking advantage of defensive miscues by visiting Youngstown State, Cleveland State beat its intrastate rival 4-0 and 7-0 in a Horizon League doubleheader at Viking Field Wednesday.

The Vikings improved to 17-21-1 overall and 5-5 in the Horizon League. YSU dropped to 10-26, 1-9.

In Game 1, all four Viking runs were unearned. In the first, leadoff hitter Tiffany Stocker (Sherrodsville, Ohio/Conotton Valley) reached on an error, stole second and advanced to third on a ground out by Kortney Spidell (Strasburg, Ohio/Strasburg-Franklin) before scoring on another ground out. With two out, pitcher Jessica Miller (Medina, Ohio/Medina) drew a walk, moved to second on a passed ball and then scored on Jackie Miller's (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) double to left. In the second it was much of the same as the the leadoff hitter, Anna Hubert (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) reached on an error and subsequently scored on a single by Stocker. The Vikes wrapped up scoring in the fifth when Stocker beat out an infield grounder to pitcher Steph Hartman (6-15) and then circled the bases when Hartman threw the ball into deep right field.

Meanwhile, Jessica Miller (6-8) scattered five Penguin hits and struck out four while the Viking defense held flawless. YSU's Amanda Berry went 2-for-3 in the losing effort.

Spidell (8-8) took over the circle in Game 2 for CSU and tossed a two-hitter for her second shutout of the year. The Viking offense put four runs on the board in the second, added a pair in the third and picked up another in the sixth.

In the nightcap, Jackie Miller went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored while Stocker was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a pair of stolen bases. In addition, freshman catcher Jackie Cornelius rapped out her first collegiate triple, which knocked in two runs, as part of the second inning barrage.

With three stolen bases on the day, Stocker increased her career total to 128 to move into 17th on the NCAA career charts.
