Viking Softball Rallies In Bottom Of Seventh To Complete Sweep Of Canisius

March 30, 2002

CLEVELAND - Junior Lindsay Ball's (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) one-out RBI single up the middle capped off Cleveland State's seventh-inning rally against visiting Canisius College Saturday afternoon at Viking Field, giving the Vikings a 3-2 win over the Golden Griffins in the second game of a doubleheader.

The Vikes captured the first game 4-1.

The game-winning RBI served as atonement for Ball, CSU second baseman, as her two errors in the top of the first led to both Canisius runs. Freshman hurler Kortney Spidell (Strasburg, Ohio/Strasburg-Franklin) scattered five hits and struck out four through the next six innnings to hold the Griffs at bay.

Canisius pitcher Gen Garcia handled the Vikings through the first six innings, allowing just one hit - a two-out triple by Tiffany Stocker (Sherrodsville, Ohio/Conotton Valley) in the third - while striking out nine through six and a third innings.

However, Stephanie Taylor (Wintersville, Ohio/Indian Creek) rapped Garcia for a double to left in the bottom of the seventh. After Taylor was replaced at second by pinch runner Heather Hlasko (Medina, Ohio/Cloverleaf), first baseman Jackie Miller (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) singled to left center. Hlasko scored and Miller advanced to second on the throw. Jessica Miller (Medina, Ohio/Medina) then slapped a pinch-hit RBI single up the middle to tie the game.

Garcia then gave up another single to Michelle Nicholas (Navarre, Ohio/Perry) to put runners at first and second. Andrea Bunten replaced Garcia, who gave up the game-winner to Ball.

Spidell picked up her first win of the year against three losses while Garcia dropped to 2-6.

In the first game, Taylor cranked a two-out, bases loaded double in the bottom of the third to give CSU a 3-0 lead. Canisius picked up its only run, an unearned one, in the sixth and the Vikings closed out the scoring with another run in the bottom of the sixth.

Jessica Miller (3-4) went five innings for the Vikes in the win, striking out five and walking just one while Spidell earned the save. Taylor and Jackie Miller each went 2-for-3 in the contest.

The Vikings will be in action again on Tuesday, April 2 when they play host to the University of Toledo Rockets at 2 p.m. at Viking Field.
