CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Tara Olson and Brooklyn Phillips scored second half goals eight minutes apart as Southern Utah defeated Cleveland State, 2-0 on Saturday night (Oct. 15) at Krenzler Field.

"We just weren't good enough tonight," head coach Derrek Falor said. "We were able to control play for an extended period in the first half but we weren't able to take advantage of it.

"We had a couple of breakdowns early in the second half and that proved to be the difference."

The Vikings did control play offensively in the first half, holding an 11-6 shot advantage at the intermission. The best opportunity to score came in the 16th minute when Abbie Kakias made a nice move in the left corner to elude a Thunderbird defender and then launched a shot that struck the crossbar at the far corner of the goal.

The tide of play turned at the intermission as the Thunderbirds outshot CSU, 14-5 in the final 45 minutes to hold a 20-16 shooting edge for the match.

Olson opened the scoring in the 58th minute when her header of a Phillips cross from the right wing slid past Viking netminder Erin Withrow.

The scoring combination went the other way ay the 65:40 mark when Olson fed a long pass down the middle that Phillips ran onto to score from five yards out.

Withrow, the Horizon League leader in saves, adding 11 more stops to her league-leading total, her fifth match with double-figure save totals this year.

The Vikings return to league play next week when they travel to Fairborn, Ohio to face Wright State on Saturday, Oct. 21.
