CLEVELAND, Ohio - Junior wrestler Marcus Effner and sophomore women's basketball player Kailey Klein have been selected as Cleveland State's Male and Female Athletes of the Month for January.

Director of Athletics Lee Reed made the announcement on Tuesday (Feb. 5) afternoon.

Effner, a Garfield Heights, Ohio native, posted a 6-2 mark on the mat in January, including a perfect 3-0 record at the Buffalo Duals and a 1-1 mark at the Ashland Duals. Effner, who also had victories in dual matches against Ashland and Eastern Michigan, is currently tied for the team lead with 23 victories this year. His 71 career wins are the most for current CSU grapplers.

Kailey Klein

Klein, who also earned CSU Athlete of the Month honors in December, averaged 17.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.1 steals per game in leading the Vikings to a 6-2 record in the month. A native of Cherry, Ill., Klein was the Horizon League Player of the Week on Jan. 28 after recording her first double-double with 30 points and a career-high 11 rebounds against Youngstown State on Jan. 26. She also recorded 24 points, six rebounds and six assists to lead the Vikings to a 65-61 win at Butler (Jan. 31) and snap a five-game losing streak in Hinkle Fieldhouse. In eight January contests, Klein, who is leading the Horizon League in scoring (19.0), shot .434 (43-99) from the field, .381 (8-21) from three-point and .804 (45-56) at the free throw line.

The Athlete of the Month award was developed last year to honor Viking student-athletes for their on-field accomplishments. A female and male honoree will be selected at the conclusion of each month during the school year.
