REVIEWING LAST WEEK: The Vikings were in action twice last week, taking on Lock Haven and Bloomsburg in their first road meets of the EWL slate. Following are recaps of both dual meets.

Lock Haven 33, Cleveland State 6:
Rob Michaels and Marcus Effner led the Vikings, winning bouts at the 165 and 174 pound weight classes. Michaels defeated Kevin Dufresne with a 10-5 decision, while Effner was victorious over Derek Caldwell with a 7-4 decision.

Bloomsburg 38, Cleveland State 7:
Marcus Effner won his second straight match to lead the Vikings along with Mike Mencini who was victorious at 141 pounds. Effner defeated Mike Dessino 4-2, while Mencini defeated Ian De Sol with a 14-3 major decision.

PREVIEWING THE VIKINGS: CSU is led by senior Marcus Effner and junior Rob Michaels who have combined for 21 victories this season. Also coming on strong for the Vikings this season are sophomores Corey Carlo with seven wins and Mike Mencini who has recorded four victories. The highlights of the season are the 31-13 victory over John Carroll on Nov. 24, the 28-20 victory over Appalachian State on Dec. 4, Rob Michaels' victory at the Midlands Invitational (Dec. 29-30) and Marcus Effner's victory at No. 13 Kent State (Jan. 5).

EFFNER RETURNING TO FORM: After his two victories this past weekend, Marcus Effner has reached double digit wins for the season. Effner posted victories at Lock Haven (7-4 dec.) and Bloomsburg (4-2 dec.) to reach 11 wins this season and extend his career total to 86 victories. He has posted double digit victories in every season as a Viking, except for his redshirt seasons, and also leads the team in career victories by more than 30. Effner is second on the team in wins this season, behind Rob Michaels who has 13.

...SECOND TO DOUBLE DIGIT WINS: With his two wins this past weekend, Marcus Effner was the second Viking to reach double figures for the season. He joins junior Rob Michaels who has 13 victories. Corey Carlo is the closest to becoming the next Viking to reach double digit wins, having seven victories this season with four duals left.

BUTLER DROPS WEIGHT: After spending the first part of the season competiting at 141, Ronald Butler dropped weight to move to the 125 pound weight class during both duals last weekend (Jan./30-31). Butler finished the weekend 0-2, falling in a 15-0 Tech Fall match and a 9-6 decision. With Butler in the line up at 125, that created the sixth and seventh dual meet line up for head coach Ben Stehura this season. Zech Huff, Dan Castillo, Corey Carlo and Nick Anthony are the only Vikings to make an appearance in all seven line ups.

MICHAELS SETS CAREER HIGH: Junior Rob Michaels has set his career high for major decisions in a season with six, after posting major decisions at the Eastern Michigan Open, Midlands Invitational and against Appalachian State, Ohio and American this season. His previous season high was five, which he set as a freshman during the 2007-08 season. He leads the team this season in the category and also leads the team with 13 career major decisions.

VIKINGS IN THE EWL RANKINGS: In the latest Eastern Wrestling League rankings, released January 7, three wreslters represent the Vikings, including Corey Carlo (157), Rob Michaels (165) and Marcus Effner (174). The five victories came during the 1986-87, 1988-89, 1989-90, 2002-03 and the 2004-05 seasons with the largest margin of victory coming on Dec. 2, 2002, 19-12.

THE HEAD COACH
Ben Stehura (Lockhaven '00)
AT CSU: 6-26 (2nd year)
OVERALL: 32-75-1 (6th year)

THE STEHURA FILE: Ben Stehura is in his second season as the head coach of the Cleveland State wrestling program. Stehura returns after leading a young Viking team to a 4-13 record during his first season at the helm. Stehura continued the trend of coaching a wrestler to the NCAA Championships last season, and for the 48th straight year a Viking wrestler advanced to the NCAA Championship with Rashard Goff representing CSU in 2009. Stehura also coached Goff to an EWL Heavyweight championship, the first league champion for CSU since the 2006 season. Stehura will use his experience with coaching a young program and lead the Vikings during the 2009-10 season, working to improve in the EWL and continuing the history and tradition of CSU wrestling.
