SETTING THE SCENE: The Vikings continue Eastern Wrestling League action, with the first EWL road matches of the season. CSU will travel to Lock Haven on Saturday (Jan. 30) and Bloomsburg on Sunday (Jan. 31). Both duals are set to begin at 1:00 p.m.

REVIEWING LAST WEEK: The Vikings opened up their EWL slate, hosting No. 18 Pittsburgh on Thursday evening. Below is a recap of the meet:

Pittsburgh 43, Cleveland State 3:
Corey Carlo recorded the lone Viking victory during the meet, defeating Pittsburgh's Donnie Tasser in the 157 pound weight class. After putting himself up, 4-0 just one minute into the first period, Carlo was able to battle through the next two periods, ending the match with a 7-3 victory.

PREVIEWING THE VIKINGS: CSU is led by senior Marcus Effner and junior Rob Michaels who have combined for 21 victories this season. Also coming on strong for the Vikings this season are sophomores Corey Carlo with seven wins and Mike Mencini who has recorded four victories. The highlights of the season are the 31-13 victory over John Carroll on Nov. 24, the 28-20 victory over Appalachian State on Dec. 4, Rob Michaels' victory at the Midlands Invitational (Dec. 29-30) and Marcus Effner's victory at No. 13 Kent State (Jan. 5).

CARLO UNDEFEATED VS. PITTSBURGH: After his 7-3 victory last Thursday (1/21), sophomore Corey Carlo is the only Viking to be undefeated against the Pittsburgh Panthers in his career. Last season Carlo beat Alex Munoz, 6-4 in an electrifying overtime match. For two straight seasons he has also been the lone Viking to score points against the Panthers in dual meet action.

JANUARY 30 & 31 BRING LUCK: The Vikings have had much success competing on the last two days of January, holding an 8-4 all-time record on the 30th and 31st combined. Over the past five seasons that CSU has been in action on the two days, the Vikings have gone 4-2, with victories over Lock Haven (2002-03), Virginia Tech (1998-99), Old Dominion (1998-99) and Duquesne (1993-94).

DOUBLE DIGITS: Through 11 weeks of action, two Vikings are within three victories of recording double digit wins for the 2009-10 season. Marcus Effner is the closest, just one win shy, posting nine wins through 13 dual meets and three opens. Corey Carlo is three wins away from the 10 win mark, with four of his wins coming during dual meet action. The duo would join Rob Michaels who leads the team with 12 wins this season.

VIKINGS IN THE EWL RANKINGS: In the latest Eastern Wrestling League rankings, released January 7, three wreslters represent the Vikings, including Corey Carlo (157), Rob Michaels (165) and Marcus Effner (174). Effner is the highest ranked Viking coming in third, while Carlo and Michaels are fourth.

VS. LOCK HAVEN ALL-TIME: The Vikings have recorded 11 victories against Lock Haven since joining the Eastern Wrestling League, while the Bald Eagles have tallied 20. Lawrence Cavello, Josh Palivoda and Marcus Effner have each recorded victories against Lock Haven in their careers. Effner leads the way, going a perfect three-for-three against the Bald Eagles in his career.

VS. BLOOMSBURG ALL-TIME: The Huskies hold a 17-10-3 all-time record against Cleveland State, with the Vikings searching for their first win in the past six seasons. The only Viking to be victorious over Bloomsburg has been Marcus Effner, doing so as a freshman in 2004-05 and as a junior in the 2007-08 season.

NEXT UP: The Vikings host Edinboro on Saturday, February 6 beginning at 5:00 p.m. in Woodling Gymnasium.

THE HEAD COACH
Ben Stehura (Lockhaven '00)
AT CSU: 6-24 (2nd year)
OVERALL: 32-73-1 (6th year)

THE STEHURA FILE: Ben Stehura is in his second season as the head coach of the Cleveland State wrestling program. Stehura returns after leading a young Viking team to a 4-13 record during his first season at the helm. Stehura continued the trend of coaching a wrestler to the NCAA Championships last season, and for the 48th straight year a Viking wrestler advanced to the NCAA Championship with Rashard Goff representing CSU in 2009. Stehura also coached Goff to an EWL Heavyweight championship, the first league champion for CSU since the 2006 season. Stehura will use his experience with coaching a young program and lead the Vikings during the 2009-10 season, working to improve in the EWL and continuing the history and tradition of CSU wrestling.
