EVANSTON, Ill. - Lawrence Cavello and Koort Leyrer posted victories on the first day of the annual Midlands Invitational on Wednesday (Dec. 29).

"It was nice to get a few victories over some quality opponents," head coach Ben Stehura said. "This was a good experience, and we'll build off it as we return to dual meet competition."

Cavello, wrestling at 149, earned a 3-1 decision over Northwestern's Dylan Marriott. He then fell in his next match, losing to Matt Mauseth of Wisconsin-Lacrosse in an 8-3 decision.

Leyrer's win came in the 157 class. He recorded the only fall of the day for the Vikings, pinning Northwestern's Pierce Harger in 4:05. Leyrer then grappled against Troy Lamson (wrestling unattached), dropping the match, 3-0.

Both victories came in consolation rounds. With the losses, the Vikings' participation in the Midlands Invitational is concluded.

Eight other Vikings competed at the Midlands, including Ben Willeford (wrestling at 125), Nick Flannery (133), Josh Palivoda (141), Robbie Michaels (165), Aric Thurn (174), Corbin Boone (184), Nick Anthony (197) and Chris Weber (HWT).

Cleveland State will resume its schedule with the Vikings' first home dual meet of the season. CSU will host Kent State on Tuesday (Jan. 4) in Woodling Gym at 7:00 p.m.
