Effner Victorious At No. 13 Kent State

Kent, Ohio - The Cleveland State wrestling squad had to wait until the seventh match of the night to put the first points on the board, when Marcus Effner recorded a 3-1 decision over Kent State's Obie Simpson in the 174 pound weight class. The Vikings were topped, 40-3 by the Golden Flashes in their first dual of 2010.

"Everyone fought really hard today and they never gave up despite the score," head coach Ben Stehura said. "I am very proud of how we wrestled tonight, not giving up on anything and hopefully this will carry over to the remainder of the season."

After a scoreless first period in the 174 pound bout, Kent State's Simpson put the lone point of the second period on the board when he went up 1-0 off an escape. Effner came back to tie the match 1-1 with his own escape point in the third period. With just 20 seconds left in the third period Effner was able to score a takedown giving him the 3-1 win.

Junior Rob Michaels had a hard fought match for the Vikings against Ross Tice in the 165 pound weight class, dropping a 13-9 decision.

Michaels had a quick takedown just 15 seconds into the match, followed by a takedown at the end of the first period to put him up, 4-1. Michaels gave up a five point move before the second period, putting him down 6-4 at the end of the first. He went on to score an escape point and another takedown late in the third period, giving him a final score of 13-9.

Also competing for CSU against the Golden Flashes were Zech Huff (133), Mike Mencini (141), Dan Castillo (149), Corey Carlo (157), Nick Anthony (184), Jeff Schuller (197) and Chris Weber (HWT).

The Vikings return to action on Saturday, January 16 when they travel to Bloomington, Ind. for the Indiana Duals. CSU will face Indiana and American University beginning at 10:00 a.m.
