AWARDS WINNERS: Team | Individuals

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State wrestling team recorded the 11th-highest team grade point average in the nation while seniors Riley Shaw and Sam Wheeler earned NWCA All-Academic honors.

The Vikings posted a team GPA of 3.237 and were the highest ranked team from the Eastern Wrestling League. CSU moved up 18 spots after ranking 29th in the country last year.

Shaw is making his second straight appearance on the NWCA All-Academic team. He captured his second consecutive EWL title at heavyweight this year and advanced to the NCAA Championship for the third time in his career. Shaw went 28-6 this year and finished his career with 102 wins. He won his 100th career match with a victory in the EWL heavyweight championship match.

A four-year team captain, Shaw was ranked in the top-20 throughout the season. Earlier this month, Shaw received the Mr. Viking Award at the VESPY's, presented to the senior student-athlete who represents what it means to be a Viking on the field, in the classroom and in the community.

Wheeler earned the honor after finishing as the runner-up at 197 pounds at the EWL Championship and earning a bid to the NCAA Championship for the second time in his career. A graduate transfer, Wheeler finished the season with a 28-9 record and tied for the team lead with five major decisions.

Awarded annually, the NWCA All-Academic team is comprised of 116 student-athletes. For the second year in a row, half of the Division I champions made the team, while two additional runner-ups were included. In all, 36 All-Americans were All-Academic selections, which is up from last year's 28.
