CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State wrestling team hosted Michigan State in its final home match of the 2015-16 season Friday evening, with the Vikings falling to Spartans, 21-17.
Friday night served as Senior Night for the Vikings, as the team honored Chas Busz, Mike Carlone, Xavier Dye, Alfredo Gray, Riley Shaw, and Sam Wheeler before the match.
The Vikings were able to get on the board first against the Spartans, as Stark picked up a 7-2 decision over Michigan State's Travis Curley at 174 pounds. The win gives Stark 14 for the season, as he is one of five Vikings with double-digit wins on the year.
After MSU was able to even the score at 3-3 following a sudden victory decision at 184 pounds, the Vikings regained a 7-3 advantage following the next weight class. At 197 pounds, Wheeler picked up his team-leading 25th victory of the season in a 13-5 major decision over Jacob Cooper of Michigan State, also marking his team-best fifth major decision.
Cleveland State then added another four points to its team score in the heavyweight class, as No. 18 Shaw picked up a 13-2 major decision victory over Michigan State's Dimitrius Renfroe. The win marked his 24th of the season, and the 96th of his career.
Michigan State then picked up wins in the next three weight classes, putting the Spartans on top 18-11 going into the 149 weight class.
Nick Montgomery picked up his 14th win of the season at 149 pounds, earning a 6-2 decision over Michigan State's Kaelan Richards to put the score at 18-14 MSU.
After the Spartans picked up another win at 157 pounds, Cleveland State's Nathan Wynkoop posted the final win of the day, earning a 6-1 decision over Michigan State's Dean Vettese to put the final score at 21-17 Michigan State.
The Vikings will close out the regular season on Sunday (February 21), traveling to Bloomsburg for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
