Shaw & Wheeler Post Two Wins Each as Vikings Fall to Ohio & Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, NC - The Cleveland State wrestling team dropped a pair of duals on Saturday at Gardner-Webb, falling to Ohio, 31-11, and to Gardner-Webb, 29-9.

Sam Wheeler and Riley Shaw won both of their matches on Saturday with Wheeler earning a 6-4 sudden victory against 12th-ranked Phil Wellington of Ohio and a 6-4 victory over Gray Jones of GWU. He improved to 24-8 this year.

Shaw, ranked 17th in the nation at heavyweight, started the day with a 17-1 tech fall in 5:38 over Jesse Webb of Ohio and also picked up a 10-3 win over Bryce Cornwell of Gardner-Webb. Shaw improved to 23-6 this year with the two wins, including 12-1 in duals.

Evan Cheek was CSU's other victor in the dual against Ohio, picking up an 8-2 decision at 133 pounds.

Mike Carlone (141 pounds) earned the Vikings third win of the dual versus GWU, topping Ryan Hull, 10-3.

The Vikings are back in action on Friday (Feb. 19) when CSU hosts Michigan State at 7:00 pm in Woodling Gym for Senior Night.
