CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State wrestling team's mini two-match winstreak was snapped Sunday afternoon, as the Vikings fell to Rider, 21-12 in an EWL contest. Cleveland State is now 6-5 overall this season, and 2-2 in the EWL, while Rider is 6-8 overall and 2-2 in EWL action.
Michael Carlone was able to put the Vikings on the board first, starting the match with a 6-5 decision over Rider's Paul Kirchner at 141 pounds, to give Cleveland State the early 3-0 lead.
Rider was then able to pick up wins in the next three weight classes, as the Broncs gained a 12-3 advantage for the contest.
Cleveland State's Gabe Stark stopped the Rider momentum at 174 pounds, as Stark posted his 12th win of the season with an 8-7 decision over Rider's Wayne Stinson.
Rider responded with victories at 184 pounds and 197 pounds to gain an 18-6 lead on the match, before Cleveland State's nationally-ranked Riley Shaw was able to swing the momentum back in the Vikings' favor with a win in the heavyweight class.
Shaw, who is ranked 15th nationally, picked up his third straight dual match victory, earning a 4-1 decision over Rider's Mauro Correnti to put the score at 18-9 with two weight classes remaining. Shaw is now 18-4 on the season.
Cleveland State's John Martin followed suit at 125 pounds, as he posted a 6-3 decision over Rider's Zach Valcarce, putting the score at 18-12 going into the final weight class.
Rider was then able to pick up a win at 133 pounds, closing out the match with the 21-12 victory.
Cleveland State will return to action next Sunday (January 31), as they will travel to Lock Haven for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
