Vikings Host George Mason for EWL Dual on Saturday

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State wrestling team returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 16) when the Vikings host George Mason for an EWL match at 12:00 pm in Woodling Gym.

The Vikings enter the dual with an overall record of 4-4 and 0-1 in the EWL, while the Patriots are 5-5 overall (1-0 EWL).

CSU has been out of action since Jan. 1-2 when the Vikings competed in the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn. Riley Shaw, who is ranked 13th in the nation at heavyweight, placed at the prestigious event for the second straight year with a sixth place showing.

Shaw, who finished fifth at the Southern Scuffle last season, opened this year's event with three straight wins to advance to the semifinals where he fell to fourth-ranked Austin Marsden of Oklahoma State, 4-1.

Shaw is 15-4 this year and has 87 career wins.

In addition to Shaw, six other CSU grapplers advanced to compete in the wrestlebacks on day two, including 125-pounder John Martin, 133-pounder Alfredo Gray, 141-pounder Mike Carlone, 174-pounder Gabe Stark, 184-pounder Nick Corba and 197-pounder Sam Wheeler who all posted 2-1 records on the first day of competition.

Wheeler had one of the biggest wins of the weekend for CSU, earning a 9-3 win over 17th-ranked Scottie Boykin of Chattanooga in the consolation fourth round.

Wheeler leads the team with 17 wins this year.

Following the dual with George Mason, the Vikings will return to action with two more EWL duals next week. CSU travels to Clarion for a 7:00 pm match on Friday (Jan. 22) and hosts Rider on Sunday (Jan. 24) at 12:00 pm in Woodling Gym.
