Shaw Places Sixth at Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Riley Shaw finished sixth at the 2016 Southern Scuffle which concluded on Saturday at McKinzie Arena, placing at the prestigious event for the second straight season.

Shaw, who is ranked 12th in the nation, placed fifth at the event last season.

He opened day two of the competition with a 5-2 victory over Max Wessell of Lehigh to advance to the semifinals where he fell to fourth-ranked Austin Marsden of Oklahoma State, 4-1. Shaw then dropped a 5-2 decision to Jared Johnson of Chattanooga in the consolation fifth round before falling to Wessell, 4-1, in the fifth place match.

The Vikings finished 25th as a team at the event that annually features many of the top programs in the country.

Michael Carlone and Sam Wheeler both picked up a win in the consolation bracket before bowing out of the tournament. The 141-pounder Carlone earned a 7-5 victory over Lucas Stewart of Campbell, while Wheeler knocked off 17th-ranked Scottie Boykin of Chattanooga.

Both Carlone and Wheeler earned their wins in the consolation fourth round.

John Martin (125 pounds), Alfredo Gray (133), Gabe Stark (174) and Nick Corba (184) also competed on day two of the Southern Scuffle.

The Vikings are now out of action until Jan. 16 when CSU hosts George Mason for a 12:00 pm dual in Woodling Gym.
