Vikings to Open New Year at Southern Scuffle

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State wrestling team will open the 2016 calendar year by competing at the Southern Scuffle on Jan. 1-2. Action is slated to begin at 9:00 am both days at the McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga.

One of the most prestigious tournaments of the season, the Vikings are slated to have 15 wrestlers compete in the event. CSU's complete list of entrants is as follows...

125 pounds - Nick DeRosa, John Martin
133 pounds - Evan Cheek, Alfredo Gray
141 pounds - Mike Carlone, Jayce Carr
149 pounds - Nick Montgomery
157 pounds - John Vaughn
165 pounds - Nathan Wynkoop
174 pounds - Gabe Stark
184 pounds - Nick Corba, Xavier Dye, Jacob Worthington
197 pounds - Sam Wheeler
HWT - Riley Shaw 

Shaw is ranked 12th in the nation at heavyweight and is coming off a strong performance at last year's Southern Scuffle when he placed fifth, posting a 6-2 mark in the event. Shaw is 11-1 overall this season with two tech falls and a pin.

Wheeler leads the team with 15 wins, posting a 15-3 record that includes a pair of major decisions, while Carr is 12-7 this season.

The Vikings are 4-4 overall this year in duals and have not competed since a 25-10 setback to Edinboro to open EWL action on Dec. 19. In that match, the Vikings received a 3-2 decision from Gray at 133 pounds, a 16-6 major decision by Worthington at 184 pounds and a 9-4 win at 197 pounds from Wheeler.

Following the Southern Scuffle, the Vikings will be out of action until Jan. 16 when CSU hosts George Mason at 12:00 pm in Woodling Gym.
