Vikings Fall To Edinboro In EWL Opener, 25-10

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State wrestling team dropped its EWL opener Saturday night, 25-10 to Edinboro.

The loss moves the Vikings to 4-4 (0-1 EWL) while the Fighting Scots improved to 5-3 (3-0 EWL).

Up against a tall task in attempting to stop Edinboro's now 14-meet EWL win streak, the Vikings gave it all they had in their hard-fought league opener. In the meet's opening match, Nathan Wynkoop dropped an 8-3 decision to undefeated Casey Fuller.

The Vikings were not discouraged, though, as they would pull seven points out of two of their next three matches. After a 174 loss, Jacob Worthington gave his most impressive effort of the season, earning a 16-6 major decision win over Edinboro's Chris Laird. Worthington was the aggressor throughout the match, executing several takedowns en route to his victory.

Sam Wheeler followed Worthington's performance by adding another win to his resume, defeating Warren Bosch in a 9-4 decision. Wheeler's win improves his record to 16-3 on the year.

In the heavyweight bout, No. 7 Riley Shaw faced one of his toughest opponents of the season. After a near-takedown from Shaw near the end of the match was reversed by Edinboro's Billy Miller, Shaw was handed his first loss of the season in the 3-1 decision. Shaw did not go without a fight, as the final points came down to an official review with under 10 seconds remaining in the match.

The Vikings, much like their season has gone all year, fought back. Following a loss at 125, Alfredo Gray continued his impressive wrestling, using his athleticism to finish a 3-2 decision over Edinboro's Anthony Rivera.
