CSU Hosts Bloomsburg for Senior Day

Last Week Highlights: 

Cleveland State wrestling visited second place Rider on Saturday (Feb. 6) afternoon as the Vikings went on to win 21-16 for their fourth win in a row.

The Vikings won their first 6 matches against the Broncs to start off a 21-0 lead. Gabe Stark, Xavier Dye, Nick Corba, #15 Riley Shaw, #15 Ben Willeford, and Alfredo Gray all gave CSU early wins to help defeat Rider. 

Alfredo Gray was named EWL's Athlete of the Week after defeating #21 ranked  and 2013-14 EWL Champion, Rob Deustch. Alfredo also put the team up 21-0 in their first six matches.

This Weekend: 

The Vikings will continue EWL play as they host Bloomsburg (0-9) for CSU's final match at home Saturday (Feb. 14). Before the matches begin, CSU will be hosting a pre game ceremony for our past All-American Wrestlers dating back to 1970. There will also be a special recognition for our senior wrestlers Ben Willeford and Matt Donohoe. Wrestling will begin at 1 p.m.

Riley Shaw is 5-0 at heavyweight in EWL action. Shaw and Willeford are both ranked #15 by the NCAA Coaches' Panel.

Our Seniors:

Willeford has been 4th as a freshman, 5th as a sophomore, and 1st as a junior in the EWL Championships. As the EWL Champion, he qualified for the 2013 NCAA tournament. He is curretnly ranked #15 by the NCAA coaches' panel at 125. In the prestigious  Southern Scuffle, he was top 12 as a junior and finished 8th this season. He has won the CSU Open twice and four other open tournaments in his career. Last spring, he finished 8th at the Freestyle University Nationals, the first ever CSU wrestler to place in that national championship tournament. Willeford is ranked as high as #13 by the Asics FloRankings and has scored bonus points in the past 4 dual meets.

Donohoe finished in 3rd last season as a junior at the EWL tournament picking up a win over the wrestler who got the NCAA wild card in the consolation final.  He has also provided a number of big wins for the team including a big pin against UT-Chattanooga in 2013 to defeat the Southern Conference champions.  He has placed high at a number of tournaments like 2nd at the Navy Classic and Eastern Michigan Open in 2013.

Willeford and Donohoe have both been four year starters for the Vikings and have won over 10 matches in each season as a starter. 

Upcoming:

Cleveland State will then wrestle against Gardner Webb and Ohio University in Boiling Springs, N.C. on Sunday (Feb. 22). Events will begin at 11:00 a.m.
