Evanston, Ill. - The Cleveland State men's swimming and diving team remained in fourth place after day two of the TYR Invitational. The Vikings have 324 points, trailing Michigan State, Northwestern and Michigan. CSU is ahead of Kenyon and defending Horizon League champion UIC.
"We are doing a great job swimming against some of the elite schools in the country, and we are able to use are depth which is something that we have been working on this season," head coach Wally Morton said. "Our relay teams are really working hard to record good times and against these schools that is something to be proud of."
Jakub Dobies led the Vikings today, swimming his fastest time of the season in the 100 breast, touching the wall in 55.72, taking home a second place finish. Dobies was also part of the sixth place 200 medley team that recorded a 1:32.16, their fastest time of the season. Dobies worked with Todd Winchell, Stephen Grove and Berry Thompson on the relay.
Winchell went on the record the fastest time of the season for CSU in the 100 fly, finishing fifth in 49.97. He also placed seventh in the 100 back recording a 52.00 flat.
In the 400 IM, Mark deSwardt swam his fastest career time during day two, touching the wall in a time of 3:57.85. Graham Thoresen also placed for the Vikings in the race, improving over his prelim time with a 4:10.57 putting him in 13th place. Thoresen was also 11th in the 200 free with a 1:43.41.
Pierre De Waal followed deSwardt, and recorded his career best time in the 200 free, finishing in fifth place with a 1:42.27.
Deni Gasparin joined Dobies in the 100 breast, taking home a sixth place finish after touching the wall in a time of 56.97.
The team of deSwardt, Winchell, Thoresen and De Waal had an excellent relay performance in the 800 free relay, recording a 6:50.75 which was good enough for a third place finish.
The Vikings wrap up action at the TYR Invitational tomorrow, with prelims beginning at 10:00 a.m. EDT and finals directly afterwards.
