Vikings Post Eighth Win of the Year

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich.-  The Cleveland State men's swimming and diving team beat Xavier 177.5-109.5, but fell to Oakland 184-109, on Saturday afternoon at Oakland.

The Vikings (8-5, 2-1 HL) had first place finishes by Alex Lewis in the 50 yard freestyle, and Stephen Schillero in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competition.  Lewis' timed out at 21.06 in the 50 free.  Lewis was also a part of both the 200 medley relay (1:34.49) team which took third, and the 400 freestyle relay (3:14.37) team which took second.  Schillero scored a 304.73 in the 1-meter dive and  320.85 in the 3-meter dive.

Head Coach Wally Morton talked about the team's performance. "After a tough trip coming up due to the weather conditions, our team swam very well and had some outstanding performances.  We are looking forward to facing another conference opponent in UIC," said Morton.

Other key contributors were senior Al Shillito who took third in the 100 backstroke (52.01) and the 100 butterfly (52.33).  Junior Nathan Grant had a solid day at Oakland finishing second in both the 100 breastroke (58.95) and the 200 breastroke (2:08.51).  Grant was also a part of the 400 freestyle relay, contributing to a runner-up finish time of 3:14.37.  Senior Justin Kermack had a second place finish in the 200 butterfly (1:52.41) and was also a part of the third place 200 medley relay team (1:34.49).  Another senior that had a key role in the pool was Brian Ferro.  Ferro finished third in the 200 breastroke (2:11.36) behind Grant.       

The Vikings will return home to conference play for their final regular season meet of the season as CSU will host UIC on Saturday (Feb. 1).  Swimming and diving will begin at noon.
