SETTING THE SCENE:  The Cleveland State men's and women's swimming and diving teams will be in action away from home on Saturday (Jan. 25) against new addition Horizon League Conference opponent Oakland University and against Big East opponent Xavier.  Oakland is one of the top mid-major programs in the nation joining the HL at the start of the 2013-14 academic year. Swimming events will begin at 1:00 p.m.

REVIEWING LAST TIME OUT:  The men and women had impressive swimming performances against Gannon Friday (Jan. 17) and against Horizon League foe Wright State Saturday (Jan. 18).  The CSU women defeated Gannon 162-55 and Wright State 193-102.  Freshman sensation Rowan Elbadry had an outstanding weekend for the Vikings, along with Jodi Turk, Alex Johansson, Sammie Sposet, Hayley Smith, and Meghan Miller also finishing atop in their events.

On the men's side, the Vikings defeated Gannon 158.5-59.5 and Wright State 181-107.  Alex Lewis continued his dominance in the pool. Through the two days he had seven first place finishes in his swimming events.  Al Shillito posted four first place wins against Wright State.  Other top place winners that had excellant times and scores were Adam Ingledew, Patrick Walsh, Danny Roberts, Nathan Grant, and Justin Kermack.

FINISHING AT THE TOP:

  • The men and women had 46 combined first place wins over the weekend.

ELBADRY AND SHILLITO DOMINATE VS. WRIGHT STATE:

  • Both Rowan Elbadry and Al Shillito posted four first place victories in their swimming events against WSU.  Elbadry won the 200 free (1:54.53), 50 free (24.16), 100 free (52.76), and was part of the 400 free relay (3:33.30).
  • Shillito won the 100 back (51.43), 200 back (1:53.70), 100 fly (50.93), and was part of the 200 medley relay (1:34.06).

LEWIS MAKES HISTORY AT U.S. WINTER NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS:

  • At U.S. Nationals Lewis set back-to-back school records in the 4x50 Free Relay and in the 100 butterfly.  His time in the free relay was an incredible 19.99 and in the 100 fly he had an impressive wall touch of 48.11.

MEN HAVE STRONG SHOWING FROM WALSH, GRANT, KERMACK, LEWIS, ROBERTS:

  • Patrick Walsh had top finishes in the 500 free and 1,000 free.  In the 1,000 free, Walsh had a top time of 9:46.63 against Wright State.  He also tallied a top time in the 500 free (4:44.97) against Gannon.
  • Nathan Grant earned top finishes in the 200 breast twice (2:10.45 and 2:07.31) against Gannon and WSU.  He won the 200 medley relay (1:34.06), 100 breast (58.56), and was part of the 400 free relay (3:08.94) against WSU.  Justin Kermack was part of a 400 medley relay team vs. WSU (3:31.79), 200 medley (1:34.06) and the 200 fly (1:52.71) vs. GU.
  • Alex Lewis won a pair of 50 free events (21.18, 20.87), a pair of 100 free top finishes (46.47, 46.89), and was a part of two 400 free relay wins (3:15.53, 3:08.94).  Danny Roberts won the 3-meter dive in both meets (361.30, 332.25).  He finished first in the 1-meter against WSU with a top score of 320.33.

  • The Vikings will host conference opponent UIC in their final regular season home meet of the season on Sat. (Feb. 1).  Swimming and diving will begin at 1:00 p.m.
