Cleveland State Falls in Heartbreaker in Dying Seconds

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University men's soccer team battled Bowling Green to a scoreless draw for over 109 minutes, but the Falcons scored off a set piece in the dying seconds at a brutally humid Krenzler Field Wednesday evening.

With the clock ticking down in the second and final overtime, Bowling Green was awarded a free kick in the CSU half after opposing players were trying to gain possession of the ball, and one went to the ground. Jacob Roth took advantage by playing a free kick just outside the six-yard box that Chris Brennan was able to get a head on and slot just inside the left post.

Despite taking the loss, true freshman Sebastian Kalk provided many highlights on the night. The rookie finished with 10 saves, including multiple point-blank stops, as he frustrated the Falcons for much of the night.

CSU held the majority of the possession early in the match and nearly pulled ahead in the 24th minute. After a period of sustained control, junior Hesham Hammouda played a ball from the right wing that classmate Jake Lagania powered forward with his head. BGSU goalkeeper Anthony Mwembia got a piece of the ball to redirect it off the crossbar, and the ball stayed out, helping keep the teams scoreless to the half.

Freshman Gabriel Pewu had a decent look in the 61st minute as he tried to find the far left corner from the right side of the box, but his low attempt went wide left.

Kalk really started to make an imprint on the game as the second half continued as he made six saves in the stanza, all of which came in the final 27 minutes.

CSU had two quality chances near the 80-minute mark. Junior Kareem Banton played a cross from the left wing, and the Vikings were just unable to knock in a bouncing ball. Lagania then gathered the ball near the corner of the 18-yard box and tried to sneak in a low shot near post, but the ball clanged off the iron.

The teams combined for only three shots in the first extra session, the only one of which was on goal came from CSU rookie Lawrence Karpeh.

The second overtime saw more action, as the teams each had a trio of shots, the final one of which would end the match in heartbreaking fashion for the hosts.

CSU took 15 total shots on the night. Hammouda took a team-leading four, all of which were on goal.

After playing 110 minutes in the heat, the Vikings will have to regroup quickly as they open Horizon League play this Saturday, Sept. 10, at Belmont.
