BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Cleveland State shot a final round 307 and finished 12th of 14 teams at the 2009 NCAA Central Regional Championship on Saturday at the par-72, 7,372-yard Club at Olde Stone.
Play began at 7:30 a.m. this morning as teams picked up play from Friday's suspended rounds and the Vikings finished their final holes and went right on into the final round.
CSU shot a 305, its lowest round of the tournament, in round two, and finished with a 54-hole total of 920.
For the third straight day, the tournament had a weather delay, but today's stoppage, which began shortly after 1:30 p.m. CST, lasted just 37 minutes.
"We just could never get anything going this weekend," head coach Steve Weir said. "But this was a great experience for our guys and hopefully we can continue to build upon these last two years and continue to make the program stronger.
"I am so proud of what these guys accomplished this season and to culminate the year by playing in the regional championship is a testament to how hard each and every player worked this year."
Senior Jake Scott, the 2009 Horizon League Player of the Year and two-time league championship medalist, concluded his brilliant career with a final round 75 and finished 54th overall.
"Jake has been so steady and so consistent for us and we are going to miss his leadership," Weir said. "He has had such a great career and has worked so hard to accomplish all that he has. We wish him the best."
Junior Patrick Elber was CSU's top finisher, tying for 39th place overall with rounds of 76-74-76 (226).
Sophomore Kent Monas tied for 60th place (76-78-79; 233), junior Kyle Cobb tied for 62nd (76-77-81; 234), while freshman James Boxley tied for 68th (82-82-77; 241).
UCLA won the Central Regional title with a one-under-par 863 and will advance to the NCAA Championships from May 26-30 at The Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Washington (870), Georgia Tech (880), Ohio State (880) and Duke (881) will join the Bruins at nationals as the top five teams advanced.
Matt Hill of North Carolina State will join the five teams at the NCAA Championships as he was the low individual from a non-qualifying team. He claimed medalist honors with a four-under-par 212 (70-71-71).
